Die Begeisterung, mit der Pink Floyd reagierte, machte das Manko an Erfahrung der Gruppe im Bereich der Filmmusik glücklicherweise wett. An manchen Stellen findet man die psychedelische Stimmung ihrer ersten Aufnahmen wieder. Besonders bemerkenswert aber sind die Qualität und die Genauigkeit, mit der die Texte geschrieben sind. Mit melancholischen Balladen wie Cirrus Minor", Crying Song" und Green Is The Color" scheint Roger Waters sich auf zukünftige Werke wie Wish You Were Here" und viel später auch The Wall" vorzubereiten. David Gilmour hingegen schärft seinen lyrischen Stil (The Nile Song"). Die überraschende Mystik, die More widerspiegelt, hat das Album zu einem Kultalbum werden lassen.

Es bezeichnet keinen Gegenstand, sondern Menschen, die nicht nur die Welt wie durch Ferngläser (engl. binoculars) betrachten, sondern deren Innenleben ebenso betrachtet werden kann. Als Linsen dienen Worte und Musik. Eindrücke werden durch sie vergrößert, entrückt, gebrochen und gestreut, je nachdem, wie nah oder fern man ihnen ist und von welcher Seite man sich nähert. Wenn Nadja Rüdebusch unter dem Namen Binoculers eines ihrer zahlreichen Konzerte spielt, werden manche von der Leichtigkeit beeindruckt sein, mit der sich Töne und perkussive Sounds als live erstellte Loops zu Songs verdichten. Mithilfe von unter anderem Gitarre, Gesang, Keyboards und Glockenspiel entstehen so Lieder, die andere aufgrund ihrer Klangfarben schätzen. Wie bei der Betrachtung eines Sommerhimmels durch die schwankende Krone eines Baumes wechseln hier lichte und schattige Momente ab, während sich die Melodien gleich dem Glitzern auf der Oberfläche eines Flusses bewegen. Oder aber Hörer achten zuerst auf Stimme und Worte, durch die “nah” und “fern” zu Empfindungen werden, Sehnsucht etwas mit Seefahrern und Raumschiffen zu tun hat und Einsamkeit keine Drohung, sondern Erfahrung ist. Nadja Rüdebusch singt auf den genau verdichtet und konzentriert von Ängsten und Schönheit, sie tut es in Bildern, die ebenso behutsam wie die Musik entworfen werden. Neben den verwendeten Instrumenten rückt vor allem diese Bildhaftigkeit Binoculers in die Nähe des Folk, dessen Tradition sie durch behutsame Erneuerung respektiert. Der Rolling Stone nennt sie in seiner Besprechung des Debütalbums “Every Seaman’s Got A Favourite Spaceship” (Labelship, 2010) eine “erstaunliche Künstlerin” und lobt “(…)(sie) verzaubert die Menschen. Mit leisem Indie-Folk, Popmusikminiaturen, Spieluhrmelodien und viel künstlerischer Fantasie.” Im November 2012 erscheint das zweite Album “There Is Not Enough Space In The Dark”. 	NEW LTD Some artists rejoice in the belief that making hideously overblown statements of their so-called intentions is the way forward to success and prosperity. Others, however, would rather just keep the whole thing simple, almost to a minimal, if slightly nonchalant degree that some would call lazy rather than effortless if it weren't for the potency of the music contained within. Californian duo Brightblack Morning Light slip quite evidently into the latter category. While it would be easy to just dismiss them as stoners or hippies, particularly due to their locality and the history that goes with it, that would be doing their engagingly tranquil wares an almighty disservice. Sure, there are obvious throwbacks in what they do to a time when Timothy Leary was experimenting with microdots and Syd Barrett was the focal point in 'The' Pink Floyd and their amazing Technicolor light and sound show. The fact that Brightblack Morning Light are of a completely different era doesn't really alter the mindset. What they do have, however, is an intense political message which is conveyed throughout 'Motion In Light'; yes, you guessed it, their opposition to United States military presence in the Middle East isn't something they take lightly, and even though these songs glide with a wistful ambience last heard on the early Porcupine Tree records, make no mistake about the more-often-than-not whispered commentary that encapsulates such soothing rides as 'Oppressions Each'. The two main conspirators here, Nathan 'Naybob' Shineywater and Rachael Hughes both have a history of being keen environmentalist spokespeople when they're not making music, and the words to 'Hologram Buffalo', the album's opening spine-tingling voyage, reads like a list of man-made crusades against what nature intended. Likewise, 'A Rainbow Aims' is a moving, cataclysmic trip that recalls Spacemen 3 in their 'Perfect Prescription' days, settling into an almost comatose loop of gently strummed guitars with the emphasis purely on coming down. Elsewhere, 'Motion To Rejoin' crosses so many boundaries musically that it would be impossible to pinpoint any one generic area of expertise Brightblack Morning Light feel safe in. Which is probably the reason why this record is so captivating in many ways; at times one can almost imagine the record being made in one take without any prior rehearsals, such is the mellow atmosphere and air of de-stressed relaxation throughout. 'Past A Weatherbeaten Fencepost' perhaps sums up the whole vibe here, taking a similar path to the experimental leanings of psychedelic legends Love while never straying too far away from Shineywater and Hughes' obvious folk roots either, in the same way America's 'Horse With No Name' is still revered, albeit quietly, by anyone with a vague interest in such a genre. 'Motion To Rejoin' looks like breaking Brightblack Morning Light's seven-year itch - their first recordings emerged way back in 2001 to little or no attention - in that the fame their core members tend to shy away from may be unavoidable to steer clear from once the masses become aware of this opus. And trust me they will, sooner rather than later. 8/10 Dom Gourlay

	new 2008 DIGGI SEALED Es gibt nicht viele Alben, die einen Frohsinn ausstrahlen, dass man es immer und immer wieder hören möchte. Und vor allem, die auch noch ein so betörendes Cover haben, wie es bei Brisa Roché der Fall ist (auch auf Vinyl). Man möchte es einfach in seinem Plattenregal haben. "Takes" eben. Auch wenn einem zum Fotomotiv Begriffe wie "zierlich" und "süß" einfallen, so wird einem beim Hören der ersten Töne aber schnell klar: Hier ist eine wahre Expertin am Werk. Eine Expertin für schöne Melodien, für leichtes und doch intelligentes Songwriting. Kleine Diamanten sind es, die "Takes" zu dem machen, was es ist: ein Album für alle Lebenslagen. Zwischen aller Freude schwingt immer auch Melancholie und ein bisschen Schwermut mit ohne dabei depressiv zu wirken. Kunstvolle Musik sozusagen, mit wunderbaren Arrangements. Aber minimalistisch. Und wirft man ein Blick in das Kleingedruckte auf "Takes", Brisas zweitem Album, dann offenbart die amerikanische Künstlerin noch mehr Talente. Sie ist neben Songwriting und Arrangements auch verantwortlich für Instrumente wie Tamborine und der so genannten Ocarina, einer Art Flöte, die aussieht wie ein Raumschiff in Fischform. Stimmlich könnte man vermuten, Brisa Roché sei Französin. Aber auch musikalisch sind da Parallelen zu erkennen, wie beispielsweise zu Charlotte Gainsbourg, dabei, so Brisa, meinen die Franzosen, dass es "kalifornisch klänge. Ich vermute mal wegen dieser verträumten Art, die Harmonien übereinander zu schichten." Roché selbst beschreibt "Takes" als eine "Mischung aus drogeninfizierten New-York-Sound, Westcoast-Psych-Pop mit Folk-Einschlag und britischer Theatralik." Na dann: Hinein ins Hörvergnügen.

	Operating from his base in Cincinnati, violinist and noisy dronester C. Spencer Yeh has released music under the name Burning Star Core for over 15 years. He’s worked with a long list of collaborators and toured extensively, the fruits of which resulted in Papercuts Theater. Broken into four equal parts (constituting four sides of the double-LP edition), the material collaged from shows recorded over the past seven years. If the release info is to be believed, Yeh used recordings from 66 different shows. The album is 66 minutes long. Coincidence? Papercuts Theater is a relatively low-fi affair, as is to be expected from live recordings, and for the most part it emphasizes the noisy drone side of Burning Star Core. While it gets pretty psychedelic at times (imagine Tony Conrad jamming with C.C.C.C.), the album isn’t afraid to venture into the surreal. With collaborators including Trevor Tremaine, Mike Shiflet, Robert Beatty and others, the extended pieces are internally consistent, but each have a distinct personality. The first part is perhaps the most hypnotic; drums, buried in the mix, lend propulsion to the otherwise textural sound. Elsewhere, peaks of frenetic freeform sound and crashing drums collapse into a calm buzzing, sparse atmospheres broken by intermittent squeaks and squawks. The third part is reminiscent of Smegma or Nurse With Wound, a nonsensical sonic environment with distant bubblings, apparent vocal gibbering, gurgling electronics and what might be trumpet. With these sorts of sounds, it’s really anyone’s guess what’s really going on. As abstractions go, it’s an entertaining one. Yeh takes full advantage of the editing opportunities, layering sounds to ensure an ongoing unfolding of events. At times, he pulls the rug out from under the listener with a sudden chop, revealing previously hidden sounds. The live murk sometimes left me wishing for more clarity, and it would be interesting to hear what Yeh might come up with given high-quality studio recordings instead of remote feeds. Nonetheless, he’s done a nice job of creating what is in a sense a virtual live performance. By Mason Jones
