	kai althoff, better known for his internationally renowned work in fine arts and his band "workshop" (releases for labels like sonig, ladomat, l'age d'or, captain trip and finlayson) has released his second soloalbum under the pseudonym "fanal"." "the second fanal album is released, and as you might know, the man behind is kai althoff. it features some extraordinary, almost brutally nasty pieces about eviction and deportation as well as a song about the instructions of a sexually obsessed man. there are almost always vocals, and none of them are nice or pleasing. one of the songs now is so german, so don't fool about it now and listen, follow the example: "he is not stupid, the german." the music is guitar, bass, synthesizer, drum computer and vocals, as already mentioned. to me it seems to be rather a vehicle to emphasise the words. the rhythm is always faster, apart from the track "mit den hunden" (with the dogs). and finally fanal poses the question: what does it mean to have a mother? one's values are dismantled, taken apart and replaced by aggression... it's fanal again, heralding a fight by physical as well as mental means. for some this music is only distinguished by its nastiness, but they'll find that all they can hope for is an hour of gentle reckoning..." 	Lex records are owning things right now, what with bagging the incredible Dangerdoom collaboration, the upcoing Ghostface joint and Subtle's latest, it's good to see them leaving enough space for the ever-brilliant Andrew Broder and his Fog moniker. ‘Loss Leader’ keeps to Broder's delicate mix of skewed acoustic songs and clever production, though the A side malfunctions with a noisy jam that could sound just as easily at home on a Dead Machines record, very unusual. It’s the flipside that’s getting me hot and bothered though, a killer continuation of the album with ‘10th Avenue Freakout Pt. 2’ and a gorgeous electronic instrumental ‘Shdws/Scrns’. Very very good indeed and hopefully a sign that there's more material on the way. Ace. Limitierte 10"
