Selbstbeschreibend „the most fascinating musiccollective“. Selbsterklärend handelt es sich um ein Klangmonster, das sich mit undurchschaubaren Bandstrukturen an das „So nicht!“ des Postrock und das „Ja, vielleicht“ der Melodien festhält. 16 is the magic number.

Kennt noch jemand GREEN TELESCOPE? Deren Singles fanden damals via Glitterhouse Mailorder den Weg auf meinen Plattenspieler! Und diese Käufe waren der Anfang einer gro?en Liebe: Zu all dem Schaffen von Lenny Helsing, dem damaligen Sänger dieser natürlich weitläufig unbekannten Garageband! Nach einigen weiteren Bands gründete Lenny die THANES, deren neues Album nun auf Screaming Apple erschienen ist..so eine Art Lebenstraum von Rickie Apple! Und schon nach dem ersten Hören wird einem klar, dass hier eine der besten Bands des ach so kleinen Neo 60's Kosmos am Werk ist! Da ist zum einen der absolut perfekte, glasklare Sound, eingespielt auf absolut puristischem Vox und Selmer Equipment, aber auch Songs, die sofort unter die Haut gehen! 12-string folk, Fuzz-Beat...meine Herren! Mir fallen da erstmal so Namen wie OPTIC NERVE, OUTSIDERS (die Holländer) oder die BYRDS ein, aber selbst diese Bands haben es schwer, gegen die Schotten anzukommen, zu perfekt ist dieses Album. Mir läuft es auch nach ca 50 maligen Hören immer noch eiskalt den Rücken runter! Hört euch die Versionen von ''it's all over now, baby blue'' (Bob Dylan)..oder das unglaubliche ''now it's your turn to cry'', dass ich bisher nur von der holländischen 60's Band THE SPARKLINGS her kannte. Dazu noch eigene Stücke, die allesamt zum Besten dieses Genre seit Jahren zählen...mit dieser Scheibe haben sich die THANES ihren Platz im Beat Olymp erspielt! Danke Ritchie, Danke..! |

Thrill Jockey is very excited to introduce you to Terrible Two, the brand new album from Baltimore’s Thank You. The album recording was engineered by Baltimore’s beloved J. Robbins (Yeasayer, Mary Timony, Jets to Brazil) at his studio and was produced and mixed by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Celebration, TV on the Radio) at his studio in New York City.
Thank You is an athletic rhythm/action unit, made up of Jeffrey McGrath, Michael Bouyoucas, and Elke Wardlaw. They are three free individuals, subsumed into a collective form that spits out dank, skittering tracks filled with light and dark.
The band has been building up a reputation via their live show, which has left audience members joyful, overwhelmed, and ready to spread the word. A seeming telepathy occurs onstage. The band enters into musical dervishes, a union, a breathless chaos that results in one hell of a Saturday night and what seems like a musical fight.
Not to worry, though. The members of Thank You are longtime friends and musical collaborators, working hard to bring to life their wholly original compositions. Musical ideas are introduced and have conversations with one another, each track filled with new articulation and insight. The basics of drums, organ, and guitar build the foundation, but are augmented by whistles, cowbell, hobo harmonica, snappy loops, car horns, and whatever else might be at hand.
With the new album, building on the template they have created, under the otherworldly guidance of producer Chris Coady, the band has utilized live staples and new compositions to create a fully realized portrait. They sing, they dance, they go far away and come back. The listener taps their toes, nods their head, and smiles, welcomed into their glorious song.
It is safe to say that beat-diggers and electronic artists will have a rich resource in the recorded output of the band, each track having the potential to be chopped and screwed, looped and loped into new soundtracks and sample beds. Don’t wait for that to happen, though. Listen to Thank You and listen to the future now.

Die Musik von "The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker" bezieht sich unüberhörbar auf die Ursprünge des Soul der späten 60er &frühen 70er Jahre. War Charles Walker doch aktiver Zeitzeuge, genau dieser Ära und nicht nur das, sondern auch jemand der diesen Sound prägte. Der aus Nashville, Tennessee stammende Sänger war schon Opener für Konzerte des ehemals "hardest working man in showbusiness" James Brown, von Etta James oder auch Wilson Picket. In den frühen 60ern war Charles Walker mit seiner damaligen Band "Little Charles and The Sidewinders" einer der heißesten Acts der New Yorker Club-Szene und veröffentlichten auf den Labels Champion, Decca und Chess. Zu den Dynamites fand Charles Walker durch Doyle Davis, Manager der Band. Sie begegneten sich bei der "Country Music Hall of Fame's Night Train to Nashville" und Davis wusste, dass er in Charles Walker den Sänger gefunden hatte, nach dem Bill Elder, Gründer und Songschreiber der Dynamites, so lange gesucht hatte.
Retro? Beim genauen Hinhören und -sehen könnte doch die aktuelle Deep-Funk Bewegung, die nicht nur von Küste zu Küste schwappt, sondern
auf sämtlichen Kontinenten populär ist, auch ein Meilenstein in Richtung späte Gerechtigkeit werden. Eine Art Unterricht in Sachen
self-empowerment, der in der Hochzeit von Stax und Motown so nicht möglich gewesen wäre.
Auf "Kaboom", diesem eigens für Walker komponierten roten Soundteppich ist zu hören, wie authentisch, homogen und folgerichtig diese Kollabaration geraten ist. Mit inzwischen vierzig Jahren Bühnenerfahrung ist Charles Walker, wie er selbst sagt, am Gipfel angekommen und glücklich in Bill Elder einen Songwriter gefunden zu haben, der für seine Stimme schreibt. Dem war nicht immer so. Dig deeper.

Continuing a tradition that began with "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" & culminated with "Shaft" & "Superfly", 'Brotherman' was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side.
In Classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was cancelled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter, guitarist and arranger Carl Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film.
Having no stills from the film to work with, The Numero Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to pint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blxploitation poster geek. This deluxe set is housed in the standard slipcase with a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film & the group that created the music.

There has been of late a resurgence of good rock music coming out of Europe to challenge the already strongly eastablished groups on the home front. Not least of these new forces is the J.J. The nine piece band has an impressive list of musical qualifications to its credit. The Belgium members of the band all studied music at the Brussels' Conservatoire and the American member Douglas Lucas, a professor who taught music at Chicago University later met the band while teaching in Brussels. Finally Mike Lovell, the English member of the group was a member of the National Youth Orchestra.
Altough from different parts of the globe they have combined together to form a very tight knit group producing their own more suttle rendition of the jazz/rock amalgam which has gone from strenght to strenght over the past few years.

"Guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne were dubbed "the Poll Winners" when they swept the Down Beat, Metronome, and Playboy polls during 1956-1957. They recorded several albums together and this CD reissue features the pianoless trio playing a variety of material, some of it a little odd (including "Volare," "Custard Puff," "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob Bobbin' Along," and "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down"). This is a good outing, particularly for bop guitarist Barney Kessel."

Alluringly extravagant abstract electronica from NYC scenester Rusty Santos, who's made his name mixing and collaborating with all the city's major musical exports (Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and Panda Bear, most prominently). The Way We Are follows up his Loaf debut The World I See, and takes a more experimental form than any of the projects he's helped out on previously. Although there are shades of Black Dice running through these playful effects-driven soundscapes, Santos avoids anything so organised or straight-forward as a loop - or even an orderly rhythm. 'Salt Water Trails' enters into a peculiar aquatic sound world full of chaos, drones and early electronics-style manipulations, while 'Space Meadow' invites the listener into a more serene, ambient spread of sounds that channels a weird, whale song psychedelia. There's noisier fare in here too, as on 'Press Play', but generally speaking however experimental all this gets your ears aren't put under too much duress. The title track is probably the most testing thing here, providing the main course in this auditory feast, and sprawling out across a disorientating half-hour of improvised laptop surrealism. |

Don\'t fear the future. These are Powers have come to conjure the new musical golden age you\'ve been waiting for--one of insistence, intensity, and light.
And yes, you can dance to it.
These Are Powers are known for the dissonance of their early recordings, a cacophony of rhythms and industrial/electronic experiments that recalled Throbbing Gristle one moment, DNA the next. Once rule-breakers, the band is now rewriting those rules with a newfound focus: behold All Aboard Future. Exotic, abstract, hand-crafted sounds--made, found and electronically born--underscore each of these nine songs. Some wail from Pat Noecker\'s prepared bass; others stem from the idiosyncratic vocal and guitar style of Anna Barie. The two trade off vocal duties, and in the process dissonant sounds become melodies held together and torn apart in fits by Bill Salas\' electro-acoustic beats. At first listen, much of Salas\' rhythmic contribution sounds as if it could be pre-programmed, but these abstract rhythms are all performed live, interspersing nods to Timbaland with an appreciation for a car crash\'s metal-on-metal grind.
Ferocious and unhinged, when These Are Powers perform live, it is a kind of spiritual journey, a futuristic fire dance hailing from Chicago and Brooklyn. The bass smolders, topping its low-end sub-rumble with a high-end flutter; abstract beats emanate from the electro-acoustic stand-up drum kit. And piercing through is Anna Barie\'s guitar while she and Noecker call and respond. Barie blasts through a litany of expressive guitar sounds and full-throated yelps and howls with a confrontational, explosive energy that often finds her entangled with audience members, leaping through the air, or sprawled on the floor in front of the stage.
With All Aboard Future, These Are Powers have embraced collaborators, demonstrating their participating in not only a music community, but a community of ideas. The band invited 13 artists from Chicago, New York and Beijing to interpret All Aboard Future, either drawing from the musical ideas of the album or solely the album title. The artwork adorns the pages of All Aboard Future\'s accompanying booklet. Photography, painting, collage, text and more--the record becomes the collective expression of artists creating in many media.
All Aboard Future was written and recorded in Chicago during the summer of 2008, and follows the band\'s 2007 debut LP, Terrific Seasons, and 2008\'s six song Taro Tarot. All Aboard Future is not just a new album from These Are Powers. It\'s a seismic shift. A new idea. And the sentiment is real. All Aboard Future! |

Der Hörer im Verhör
Das eröffnende Stück „Numerology (Aka Numbers)“ ist da beispielhaft: Ein zunächst gemäßigter Beat nimmt Fahrt auf, ein scharfes Postpunk-Gitarrenriff legt sich darüber, Jack Barnett stellt im Sprechgesang eine dem Ton nach offenbar äußerst dringliche Frage: „What’s your favourite number? / What does it mean?“ Tatsächlich findet hier ein Verhör statt, wie mit einem zufällig in die Fänge eines Geheimdienstes geratenen Hörer, der nur raten kann, was man von ihm wissen will.
Es folgen Erläuterungen zur Zahlensymbolik, unterlegt mit Synthesizer-Signalen. „Every number has a meaning“, insistiert Barnett und wiederholt ebendieses Axiom mehrfach wie ein Mantra. Auch die Zahl seiner Wiederholungen muss hier etwas bedeuten. „I will say this twice“, heißt es am Anfang und am Schluss des Albums.
Pop als Geheimcode
Obwohl der Promotext noch auf die Zahlenmystik des Renaissance-Okkultisten John Dee hinweist, geht es hier offensichtlich um Konzeptpop, um Musik, in der jeder Beat über sich hinausweist, ohne dass sich eine Bedeutung fixieren ließe: „This Music is weightless, this music’s symbolic“, singt Barnett. Auf „Numbers“ folgt „Colours“, weitere Titel lauten etwa „C. 16th +-“ oder „ £4“ oder „MKK3“ – benannt nach einem Botenstoff im Körper. Geheimcodes, Chiffren und Abkürzungen sind das Material, aus dem These New Puritans ihre Songs eher erzeugen als komponieren.
Herausgeschriene Parolen wie „We were right / We were right / We were right“ oder ein immer wieder repetierter Refrain wie „En Papier“ gewinnen jenseits der kryptischen wörtlichen die höhere Bedeutung von Schlacht- oder Ordnungsrufen. Das führt im Klangverbund mit den schmerzenden Bassläufen, den schrillen, sirenenartigen Synthesizern und den Feedbacks zu im Höchstmaß ansteckender Hysterie, zu einer Alarmstimmung, die auf globale und gesellschaftliche Krisen reagiert.
Experten schauen dich an
Es ist keine Zeit mehr zu verlieren mit Musik über private Befindlichkeiten – man ist schließlich im Visier. „We’re being watched by experts“, weiß Barnett in „Elvis“, und dagegen helfen nur fachmännisch errichtete Klangwände. Im Video dazu sieht man auf drastische Weise die unter die Haut gehenden Überwachungsmaßnahmen. Gegen die normierende Biomacht mobilisieren These New Puritans den Körper des Hörers, der unmittelbar und ohne Umwege über die Großhirnrinde angewählt wird. Die Nummer, unter der man alle erreicht, ist die Taktzahl.
Zur Besessenheit der Band von Zeichenuniversen passt auch die Geschichte ihres schnellen Ruhms, als sie der Modedesigner Hedi Slimane den Soundtrack für seine letzte Herbstkollektion entwerfen ließ. Den Retro-Look von „Beat Pyramid“ ließen sich These New Puritans von Gareth Jones perfektionieren, der seinerzeit legendäre Alben von Depeche Mode, den Neubauten oder auch Wire produzierte – deutlich hörbare Einflüsse, die die vier erst Neunzehnjährigen (neben Jack Barnett dessen Zwillingsbruder John am Schlagzeug, Thomas Hein am Bass und Sophie Sleigh-Johnson am Synthesizer) sendungs- und selbstbewusst an die Gegenwart anschließen: Postpunk im Präsens.
Verschärfte Wahrnehmung
Denn es geht nicht um Achtziger-Vintage oder um billige, radiotaugliche Wiedererkennungseffekte, sondern um die Indienstnahme mit Aggressivität und Apokalypse konnotierter Soundpartikel, um die Erzeugung hypersensibler Wahrnehmung. Daher ist „Beat Pyramid“ weder ein massentaugliches Tanzalbum wie von Hot Chip noch ein zu ertüftelndes Klangkunstwerk für den Kopfhörer daheim, sondern eine Warnung. Sie sagen es nicht zweimal.

The Third Memory liefern das erste waschechte Screamo-Highlight in 2009 ab. Wer eine Schwäche für Ebullition- oder Witching Hour-Sachen hat sollte hier absolut ein Ohr riskieren. Heutzutage gehen nicht mehr viele Bands in diese Richtung. The Third Memory gehören dazu. Sie grenzen sich völlig von ihren Landsleuten ab. Und das noch viel stärker als auf ihrem Debüt. Diese düsteren, verzweifelten Melodien, diese bedrohlichen Gitarrenleads, dieser krasse, gern auch gedoppelte Schreigesang - hier erinnert vieles an die Zeit um 2000 rum. The Third Memory klingen allerdings nie wie ein Abklatsch. Eben weil sie diesen Sound in die Neuzeit transportieren. Wer seinen Screamo gerne mit elend langen Spannungsbögen oder Postrock-Einflüssen genießt, der ist hier definitiv an der falschen Adresse. Die Franzosen kloppen sich im no bullshit-Stil durch die 10 Songs hindurch. Zu einem Massaker wirds deswegen aber niemals, bringen die präsenten Gitarrenmelodien doch eine dicke Portion Eingängigkeit mit in den Sound. War das erste Album schon ziemlich stark, haben The Third Memory mit dem Nachfolger überraschenderweise noch einen draufgelegt. |

Exile began his musical career in 2000, releasing drum & bass on labels such as Beta and Moving Shadow, but as the years progressed, his sound started to become more complicated and abstract. This was mostly due to his obsession with the Reaktor software, which enabled him to spend much of his time creating new and interesting sounds from scratch. His debut full-length, 2006\'s Pro Agonist, saw him add elements of breakcore to his constantly mutating hyper-breakbeats, but that gradual change in style is nothing compared to the total departure that he\'s taken on Listening Tree.
Long-term fans may be shocked to know that Listening Tree is peppered with Exile\'s own vocal tracks, as he tackles issues such as Britain\'s buy-now-pay-later culture, and even the dynamic nature of the universe on \"Family Galaxy,\" the first single. \"\'Family Galaxy\' is about the constant process of change that underpins everything,\" explains Exile. \"It\'s a tale from a thingless world where nothing stays the same. As \'now\' shines its shifting shades on \'then,\' so our ideas of what we have done and will do continually morph.\"
The result is an eccentric electro-pop album that is just as likely to appeal to fans of Hot Chip as it is Otto Von Schirach. |

Die ersten 2-3 Durchläufe lie?en mir die Kinnlade schon gewaltig ins Bodenlose fallen, ist man doch einen solchen Sound in der Qualität aus heimischen Gefilden alles andere als gewohnt. Gro?artiger PostPunk mit einer herrlichen GitarrenIndieRock Kante und jeder Menge Hitpotential...da schlägt das Herz am rechten Fleck. Leicht rauer, rauchiger Gesang trifft auf breitflächigen Gitarrensound mit Mut zur Melodie. Keine Frage das einem sofort Namen wie Hüsker Dü, Guided By Voices oder auch Wipers in den Kopf schie?en. Sicherlich wird hier das Rad nicht zum zweiten mal erfunden, aber wer schafft das heute schon noch? Sicherlich ist das Album eine kleine Huldigung an einen Teil der musikalischen ?berzeugungstäter die uns alle über die letzten 10, 15...Jahre begleitet haben, aber was spricht dagegen wenn es so gut gemacht ist. Mit der Tonmeisterei in Oldenburg, sicherlich schon ein Begriff in der heimischen Szene der für Qualität steht, wurde auch ein Studio gefunden das den Sound hätte nicht besser umsetzen können. Starting out life as Peter and the Silhouttes, these happening cats kicked off their career in 1965 and a year later they unveiled a single called ''Claudette Jones,'' which can be heard on ''Tol-Puddle Martyrs.'' An aggressive rocker sporting a deadly vocal and a hook to slit your wrists for, ''Claudette Jones'' reminds me of a prime Pretty Things pounder, due to its insistently driving beat and hard-edged bluesy approach. When Peter and the Silhouttes changed their name to Tol-Puddle Martyrs, they also altered their style a bit, spicing their material with a groovy paisley fragrance. Released in 1967, ''Time Will Come'' features a round of cynical lyrics addressing the turbulent mood of the day and carries a rather haunting pitch that slashes right through your psyche. The vocal delivery on the tune is strong and convincing, while the taut instrumentation really locks it all together. The flip side of ''Time Will Come'' is just as effective. ''Social Cell'' boasts a catchy melody similar to Johnny Rivers' ''Secret Agent Man,'' and like ''Time Will Come,'' the tune is charted of thoughtful verse that finely captures band leader Peter Rechert's flair for writing top-flight observations. It should also be noted that Tol-Puddle Martyrs were a fantastic pop band. Their music does indeed flash plenty of commercial appeal, making the tracks on this record the kind of stuff you won't soon forget. Forever lodged in your brain these songs will be! The band's pop influence is especially evident on a single they issued in 1968, as the whimsical ''Love Your Life'' flickers with dapper Kinks aspirations. Smart arrangements and a sincere passion for the music, they performed are additional assets to be found in the recordings of Tol-Puddle Martyrs. Totally excellent tunes from yet another totally excellent sixties band from Australia! |

Noch nie war eine Band so nahe dran an dem, was weh tut. An dem, was einen Nachts nicht schlafen lässt. Man ist nach dem ersten Hören des Albums fast geneigt zu sagen ‚Coldplay und Travis auf deutsch', denn Tomte sind inzwischen so weit weg von ‚Schrammel', wie man es als Rockband sein kann.
Es sind über 45 Minuten Musik, die wie die letzten zehn Minuten von ‚Club der toten Dichter' sind.
Und nebenbei: Das Album ist Hit an Hit an Hit. Frei von der Dummheit eiserner Kreuze auf Plattencovern. Frei von ironischer Überspitzung. Für jede Gemütslage. (…)

Splitrelease dieser beiden Bands, die nicht nur durch dieses Album miteinander connectet sind. Bei Torpedo handelt es sich um die Backing Band von Tiger Lou und unter anderem Leute von Crystal Committee und Starmarket, bei Las Puertas um Rasmus Kellermann alias Tiger Lou himself und seine Frau Andrea. Somit ist auch klar das beide Bands auch musikalisch nicht soweit auseinander liegen können. Es gibt also zweimal exzellenten, schwedischen Pop zuhören, der bei Torpedo eher ausschweifend, melodieverliebt und ungemein harmonisch daherkommt. Las Puertas fassen sich da eher kurz und bündig, die Songs sind kaum länger als 2 Minuten und versprühen einen eher spröden Charm was wohl hauptsächlich in dem ein wenig schrammelig daherkommenden Sound begründet liegt. |

The 12" is presented in a proper LP jacket and pressed in an edition of 1,500 copies for the world and cut at 45rpm.
To follow up the release of their first new studio album in five years, Tortoise returns with a two song remix 12" of songs from Beacons of Ancestorship. In the late 90s Tortoise released a series of highly influential remix 12"s with remixers as diverse as Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Oval, Autechre, Unkle and Derrick Carter. It is no surprise that their return to the remix 12" format features other luminaries of the scene. Side A features none other than Eye from Boredoms doing a remix of the album's opening track "High Class Slim Came Floatin' In". Side AA features the legendary dub/version master Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound doing a Version of the track "Gigantes".
Pressed in an edition of 1,500 copies for the world and cut at 45rpm this 12" is sure to sell out instantly (as did the vinyl edition of Beacons).
The 12" is presented in a proper LP jacket and features black and white photography from Andrew Paynter. Andrew's photography was also featured on the Beacons of Ancestorship jacket and he was behind the incredible video for the song "Prepare Your Coffin". |

A local St. Louis, Missouri band. Only 100 copies of their album were pressed and
the two non
LP 45s were often given away free with it.
Were talking an ultra rarity of the highest order here.
There are a couple of throwaway country tracks
(Happy Face and Got To Keep Travelling On) and the finale, Gettin Off, is marred
by a drum solo but the rest is for the most part mindblowing psychedelia.
The best of these are Catfish, with some bluesy psychedelic guitar work, and two social
commentary songs, Get A Gun and Lets Keep The Children On The Streets,

Von Comadre ist dies die nächste Veröffentlichung nach der grandiosen ''burn your bones''. Im großen und ganzen sind die sachen punkiger geworden, was der Qualität jedoch nicht im geringsten schadet. Sehr catchige songs mit einem absolut süchtig machenden Ohrwurm - Anfangstrack. Trainwreck. Nachdem sie ihre erste ep nach nur drei Monaten Bandexistenz einspielten, haben sie sich mit der nächsten Veröffentlichung ein bißchen mehr Zeit gelassen. Gut so, man kann nicht sagen das die Sachen besser sind als die alten,aber das wär ja auch so, als wenn orchid versuchen würden ihre ''Dance tonight revolution'' zu toppen. |

Refused are fucking dead und JR Ewing haben sich aufgelöst. Dennoch sind partiell beide Bands bei Traktor vorhanden. Natürlich kommt die Band auch aus Skandinavien, aus Schweden um genauer zu sein und es braucht auch keiner weiteren Erwähnung, dass die oben genannten Bands eine große Rolle beim Thema ''Einflüsse'' spielen. Eigentlich sollten ''Traktor'' auch in Zentraleuropa bekannt sein, da sich die Band schon im Jahr 2002 gegründet und mit diversen Touren auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat. Auf ihrem dritten Album ''Sequence the sequence'' schrammelt und schreit die Band, was das Zeug hält. Wieder mal reicht der erste Song aus, um eine Band zu beschreiben. ''Lesson for Crimes'' beginnt mit einer eingehenden Melodie, die sich auf vier Akkorde beschränkt. Kleiner Break und der Gesang mit einem dicken Plus an Geschrei setzt ein. Und hier spielt der erste von den oben genannten Einflüssen eine Rolle. Dann geht es los: Der Sound wird hektischer und fängt an zu ''frickeln''. Egal, ob Math oder nicht, Traktor führen das aus, was bei JR Ewing in einigen Songs (Change Is Nothing - Everything Is) zu erahnen war. Immer wieder kommt es zu kleinen Breaks, welche die Melodien stoppen. Mit kurzen und ruhigen Passagen, befreien ''Traktor'' den Hörer für einen kurzen Moment und gaukeln ihm eine Welt voller Harmonie vor. Diese wird in den nächsten Sekunden vom Einsetzen der zweiten Gitarre und dem sich steigernden Sound zerstört - Ende. Diese Art von Musik dominiert auf ''Sequence the sequence''. Jedoch geben sich ''Traktor'' milde und zwei der elf Tracks sind ruhige, progressive, instrumentale Songs, in denen sich der Hörer fangen und von der Hektik ausruhen kann, bevor es in eine neue Runde geht. Der Norden Europas hat durch seinen eigenen Sound schon öfter von sich reden gemacht. Traktor leisten mit „Sequence the sequence'' einen positiven Beitrag. limitiert auf 500 Stück |

Die dritte Platte von Trend durchdringt den Grauschleier. Fassungslos über den aktuellen Wahnsinn aus Wirtschaft, Staat und Fernsehen, schauen die Texte genau hin. Der Trick dabei: Die Begriffe, mit denen dort sorglos jongliert wird, werden wörtlich verwendet und dadurch auf ihren eigentlichen Sinn abgeklopft. Der noch wichtigere Trick beim Transport der Trendthemen ist aber die Musik, die nach ganz vorne auf die Bühnen drängt. Es gibt drei bis vier klassische Punkbretter, und es gibt in den anderen Titeln Beimischungen von Chören, Elektronik und Wave-Einflüssen, die in Hits wie ''Zigaretten Ziehen'', ''Fräulein vom Amt'' oder ''AZ/DC'' münden. Das wirkt dann, als würde im Musikzimmer plötzlich das Licht angeknipst werden. Punk wird zu Pop, ohne Kompromisse dafür einzugehen. Und man muss schon ganz schön zurückdenken, wann man das letzte Mal so etwas Klares und Durchkickendes hierzulande gehört hat. Kommt als normale Version und als special Version mit weißem Vinyl und zusätzlichem Poster! |

Die R&B Wurzeln sind durchaus noch vorhanden, wechseln sich beim Gitarren-Sound aber mit messerscharfen Garage-Punk-Riffs die fast schon an die REATARDS heranreichen, dazu ein meist dichter Orgel-Teppich vom Sound zwischen R&B und leicht düsterm New Wave Punk. Starkes Album mit treibenden Garage Punk Krachern wie etwa ''Time/Min.'', ''Man With Direction'' oder ''Ritalin'' die irgendwo zwischen MURDER CITY DEVILS, OBLIVIANS und T.S.O.L. zu Zeiten von ihrem Album ''Beneath The Shadows'' liegen. Dazu kommt mit ''Forget Loyality'' eine Nummer mit Songstrukturen im Stil von WARSAW, mit ''Tired Luxury'' gibt es eine schwer von Soul und Memphis-Rock'n'Roll infizierte Nummer die an REIGNING SOUND erinnert, und zum Rhythmus von ''Like A Dead Man'', bei dem die TURPENTINE BROTHERS No Wave Strukturen mit erdigem Blues Punk verbinden, kann man bildlich gesehen eine ganze Horde Zombies torkeln sehen. |

Nach einer wahren Ochsentour durch die
internationale Clublandschaft in 2006 (fast 200
Konzerte) meldet sich das Folk-Duo aus San
Francisco nun mit fünf vornehmlich ruhigen Songs
zurück. Adam Stephens und Tyson Vogel, die in
der Vergangenheit vor allem wegen ihrer
aggressiven, elektrischen Shows gerühmt wurden,
pflegen ihre musikalische Dualität, indem sie die
Songs auf „The Scenery of Farewell“ akustisch
aufnahmen. Was allerdings nicht bedeutet, dass
die fünf Lieder spärlich instrumentiert sind. Neben
Gitarren, Klavier und Gartenschlauch sind hier
Cello, Geigen und Kontrabass zu hören, die Songs
sind allesamt kleine Hymnen für ein sommerliches
Beisammensein am Lagerfeuer.
„The Scenery of Farewell“ bietet einen
Vorgeschmack auf das im Herbst erscheinende
dritte Album der beiden Neo-Traditionalisten. Das
ist dann wieder elektrisch. |

Tyrannen drangsalieren die Welt, jetzt erobern sie auch noch den Spieltisch: Findige Kreative haben "Tyrannen-Quartette" erfunden. Kritiker bezeichnen es als geschmacklos, doch das Geschäft boomt. Es ist makabres Kräftemessen, das dem Trend zum skurrilen Kartenquartett ein weiteres Kapitel hinzufügt.
Die Karten sind gemischt, das Spiel kann beginnen. Herrschaftsdauer: 38 Jahre. So lange war der Schah von Persien an der Macht, länger als die meisten Tyrannen. Das müsste reichen. Doch die Gegenseite hat einen noch Altgedienteren auf der Hand, Kaiser Hirohito aus Japan. Der brachte es auf 62 Jahre. Nun also andersherum. Alter bei Machtübernahme: 36. Jetzt herrscht erst einmal Diskussionsbedarf. Wer sticht wen? Der Späteinsteiger den Youngster oder umgekehrt? Umgekehrt. Wer früher damit anfängt, kann im Idealfall länger wüten. Kim Il-Sung, der nordkoreanische Diktator, hat somit keine Chance gegen Zar Nikolaus II., der mit gerade einmal 26 Jahren den russischen Thron bestieg.
Von Volksmord bis Kleptokratie
Willkommen im Kartenhaus des Bösen. 32 Menschenfeinde vom Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts bis in die jüngere Zeit liefern sich einen makabren Wettstreit im "Tyrannen-Quartett". Wo es früher um Autos, Flugzeuge und schlimmstenfalls Panzer ging, um Hubraum, Tragfläche und Schussweite, ist hier nun die Höhe des zusammengerafften Privatvermögens oder die Zahl der Todesopfer entscheidend. Die einzelnen Kategorien schreiten ein breites Feld der Verwüstung ab. "Völkermörder" bilden eine Viererbande, "Kleptokraten", "religiöse Eiferer", "US-Marionetten", "Faschisten" und "Kommunisten". Pol Pot, Bokassa, Franco und Khomeini sind vertreten und natürlich die Klassiker des organisierten Massenmords, Hitler und Stalin.
"Einige stellten sich von selbst auf, andere haben es nicht unter die ersten 32 geschafft", sagt Jörg Wagner, einer der beiden Erfinder des "Tyrannen-Quartetts", der im eigentlichen Beruf Filmemacher ist. Die Leitkriterien, präzisiert Jürgen Kittel, Wagners Kompagnon und Leiter eines Hamburger Filmfestivals, seien Größenwahn und Allmacht gewesen. Und eine Skrupellosigkeit, die über Leichen geht. Ein sozialistischer Betonkopf wie Erich Honecker etwa terrorisierte zu gemütlich, um beim Casting in die nächste Runde zu kommen. Es ist ein Spiel nicht frei von Zynismus, das die beiden Hamburger unter ihrem Label "Weltquartett" auf den Markt gebracht haben. Der ursprüngliche Plan, die Tyrannen nach Bartfläche und Körpergröße zu kategorisieren, wurde dann aber doch fallen gelassen. Ein solcher Populismus hätte dem historischen Ernst nicht entsprochen.
was bisher geschah....
Es war vor zehn Jahren, da saß Jörg Wagner bei seinem Kumpel Jürgen Kittel in der Küche. Sie kloppten Panzer-Quartett, Jürgens Lieblings-Kartenspiel aus Kindheitstagen. Im Hintergrund dudelte ausgerechnet Bob Dylans pazifistische Hymne "Masters of War". Vielleicht lag es an der Absurdität der Situation, vielleicht auch nur am Apfelwein, der die Fantasie der beiden Hamburger beflügelte - jedenfalls wurde an jenem Abend die Idee geboren, ein Quartett über Tyrannen zu kreieren.
Hitler, Taliban-Chef Mullah Omar, Stalin, Idi Amin, ein Sammelsurium der größten Menschheitsschinder als Kartenspiel zum Bluffen - warum gibt es das eigentlich noch nicht? Ein Jahrzehnt ging ins Land, bis der Idee der beiden, die im Filmgeschäft tätig sind, Leben eingehaucht wurde. Wobei der Gag im Vordergrund stand, nicht das Geschäft.
Die Regeln kennt man von vergleichbaren Spielen mit Monster-Trucks oder Choppern: Gefragt wird, wer von den 32 Diktatoren am längsten an der Macht war, das größte Privatvermögen hatte, die meisten Todesopfer zu verantworten hat. Die höchste Zahl sticht.
Ist der spielerische Umgang mit Massenmördern nicht makaber? Jörg Wagner verneint. Er versteht sein Spiel als Gag, schwarzer Humor in britischer Tradition sei das. Und ganz nebenbei ist das Geschichtsunterricht im Spielkartenformat. Wer weiß denn schon, dass Jugoslawiens Autokrat Milosevic ein Privatvermögen von 1,5 Milliarden Dollar angehäuft hat?
Seit Kurzem kann das Quartett via Internet sowie in einem Laden auf St. Pauli (siehe unten) gekauft werden. Zum Preis von zehn Euro. Erfinder Jörg Wagner (40) und Laden-Inhaber Ralph Haiber (37) registrieren eine "explosionsartige Nachfrage", seit gestern ein Artikel auf "Spiegel online" erschien. Innerhalb weniger Stunden wurden über 100 Karten-Sets verkauft. Nachfragen gingen sogar aus England ein. Die "erste Auflage" von 1000 Spielen ist fast vergriffen. Der unerwartete Hype hat Wagner und Kittel, beide sind erfolgreiche Regisseure, inspiriert. Ein Kartenspiel über Seuchen ist bereits auf dem Markt, weitere Folgen aus der Serie "Geißeln der Menschheit" sind geplant. Wagner nicht ganz ernst: "Vielleicht kreieren wir demnächst ein Quartett über skrupellose Manager. Oder über eingewachsene Zehennägel - beide nerven kolossal."
