Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt, Helena Marnie und Mira Aroyo kitzeln herzzerreißende Popmusik aus herrlich alten Moog-Synthesizern. Info
Drawn together from both sides of the North Sea, 'Laura Vane & The Vipertones' consists of musicians from various Dutch & UK projects pooling their respective skills for this funk & soul group. From Holland, and more precisely Dordrecht in the south east of the country, Phil Martin & Ton Van Der Kolk - also known as producers duo AIFF - provide their instrumental talents developing the grooves and beats fired over the internet from the northern UK town of Burnley by Jonathan 'Diesler 'Radford. Finally, and having cut it amongst the big boys working with The Streets, Gnarles Barkley & MJ Cole amongst others, Laura Vane, hailing from Brighton on the south coast of the UK, provides the sweet vocals and imaginative lyrics to the project.
They are completed their debut LP, that will be released on SocialBeats / Unique Records, in spring 2009 with many e-mails, skype talks and recording sessions in Holland. The first single taken from the LP is 'Steam', and original composition penned in one September saturday afternoon by Laura and it is joined on the flip-side by the exciting ' Man Of Your Word.

I've had some dance releases on labels such as Ministry, Soulfuric, Device, Big Love, Toolroom, Juicy and Ink, with peeps such as ROBBIE RIVERA, MJ COLE and DAVE SPOON which have received airplay and support from well known Radio Djs, such as PETE TONG, and on shows such as 1XTRA
I've continued working with THE STREETS since 'The Hardest to Make and Easy Living' 2006 for their new album, which is pending release in the spring of 2008. I have also worked it live with GNARLS BARKLEY, and enjoyed a little TOP OF THE POPS moonlighting! Most treasured gigs include performing alongside respected singer / songwriters such as OMAR, CARLEEN ANDERSON and LEWIS TAYLOR.
Contributions to DIESLER 's (Tru Thoughts/Freestyle) latest album 'The Rhythm Station' of 2007, introduces two new tracks to our catalogue of collaborations, and HINT's (Tru Thoughts) 'At the Dance' EP, released late 2007 tucks me in neatly and his fresh new album 'Driven to Distraction', released in July 2008 see's me feature twice nicely! Also I will be featuring on the new HARDKANDY album 'Second to None' (Wah Wah 45) also released in July 2008. There is definately some heat in the kitchen...

"Le Volume Courbe (the volume curve) ist das Projekt von Charlotte Marionneau. Vor 10 Jahren zog sie von Pays de la Loire (Frankreich) nach London und machte alsbald Bekanntschaft mit der dortigen Musikszene: Hope Sandoval und David Roback (Mazzy Star, Opal), Kevin Shields und Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Stephen Duffy und Andrew Innes (Primal Scream) halfen bei dem Debut „I Killed My Best Friend“ aus. Bei diesem Namedropping an Musikern und Produzenten hätte man Schlimmes erwarten dürfen. Aber Madame Marionneau scheint sie alle im Griff gehabt zu haben. Die Songs klingen wie ein Tape, das ein paar Jahre vergessen auf dem Dachboden lag: Nostalgisch und mit einer gewissen Portion LoFi-Charme, ein wenig improvisiert und sehr intuitiv. Musikalisch erinnert das Werk an alte Meister wie Serge Gainsbourg, Nina Simone und Nico. Eigentlich hätte das Album bei Poptones, dem Label von Alan McGee, erscheinen sollen. Der brachte vor 4 Jahren schon die Debut 7“-Single heraus, die innerhalb von einer Woche ausverkauft war. Die Aufnahmen in Marionneaus Wohnzimmer zogen sich jedoch über Jahre hin. Poptones ging derweil Pleite, so dass sich nun Honest Jones, das Label des Blur-Sängers Damon Albarn, mit diesem Juwel schmücken darf." Sunday Service

Die Liars kündigen die Veröffentlichung ihres fünften Studioalbums, "Sisterworld", für den 05.03.2010 an. "Sisterworld" ist der Nachfolger des selbstbetitelten Albums "Liars" (2007) und wurde in Los Angeles von Liars und Tom Biller (Kanye West, Beck, Where The Wild Things Are / Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind soundtracks) geschrieben. "Sisterworld" ist seit "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned" (2004) das erste Liars-Album, das in den USA aufgenommen wurde. Es reflektiert die Erfahrungen, die Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill und Julian Gross in der Subkultur von Los Angeles gemacht haben, in der sich so viele verschiedenen Menschen eingerichtet haben, die von Los Angeles angezogen wurden um dort ihr Glück zu suchen. "Sisterworld" ist ein ganz eigenes Liars-Album, ohne hörbare Einflüsse und sehr weit weg von den oft falschen Versprechungen und zerbrochenen Träumen von Los Angeles. Auf "Sisterworld" untersucht Liars die Undergroundkultur zu erkunden, die sich in der Stadt gebildet hat um dem Verlust der eigenen Identität in der oberflächlichen Gesellschaft von Los Angeles entgegenzuwirken. Die Band erklärt dazu, "Uns interessieren die alternativen Lebensräume die sich die Leute in Los Angeles aufgebaut haben um ihre eigene Identität in dieser Stadt zu wahren. Lebensräume, in denen Outcasts und Einzelgänger eine verdrehte Beziehung zum Rest der Gesellschaft führen."

Engaging though it has been, there isn\'t much in Robert Lowe\'s previous discography that directly anticipates Lichens, his new solo project. As singer and bassist for 90 Day Men, and as new member of TV on the Radio, Lowe has been involved in his share of nervy, tough-to-pigeonhole art-rock. On The Psychic Nature of Being, however, he leaves behind all graspable traces of rock, opting instead to detail a deeply contemplative sequence of fingerpicked guitars and enigmatic veiled drones. And though this ambient, experimental approach has long been heavily trafficked-- particularly by those on the Kranky roster-- Lowe\'s understated playing and deceptive melodic skills enable him to here succeed in claiming a relatively untouched acre.
The three lengthy pieces on The Psychic Nature of Being were recorded as real-time compositions without overdubs or edits. This curious, needlessly constrictive recording technique does make the album\'s deliberate, measured structure more impressive though not necessarily more entertaining. Throughout these tracks, Lowe uses wordless vocal loops as a mesmeric foundation over which he positions his tasteful acoustic fingerpicking and assorted effects, in a manner rather reminiscent of latter-period John Fahey albums like the Jim O\'Rourke-produced Womblife. But Lowe\'s playing here is not as resolutely blues-based as Fahey\'s, and his meditative compositions ultimately dock somewhere between Six Organs of Admittance\'s most diffuse works and the slowed-gravity drones of Kranky labelmates like Stars of the Lid.
Both of the album\'s first two tracks open with long unaccompanied stretches of Lichens\' unique vocal effects, whose hushed, recurrent loops can sound almost medieval in their outspread minimalism. On \"Kirlian Auras\" these time-stretched drones prove so captivating that it comes as something of a jolt when the guitar finally enters a few minutes into the piece. As a guitarist, Lowe plays with a graceful melodic economy, allowing his instrument to effortlessly join into the ongoing ambient currents without overwhelming them. In fact, his playing seems so patient and considered that you\'re unlikely to even detect the album\'s improvised origins.
The Psychic Nature of Being closes with it\'s longest piece, the 20-minute \"You Are Excrement, You Can Turn Yourself Into Gold\". Not coincidentally, it\'s this track that could have benefited most from some judicious editing. Building gradually from tiny, bell-like tones, the track eventually takes on a more electric hue as Lowe\'s flickering guitar accumulates layers of delay and refined distortion. Unfortunately the track\'s subtle momentum isn\'t always enough to keep the music from occasionally spilling off into quiet, dormant eddies. And it\'s during these brief, inactive lapses that the listener may find cause to hope that on the next Lichens release, Lowe will permit himself the luxury of a genuine revision or two

Lights out! aus Stuttgart holen zum großen Wurf aus: nach ihrer Debut-Single und dem großartigen ''Destroy/Create''-Album gibt`s hier die bisher besten Aufnahmen der Band. Kurze, straighte Hardcore-Punk-Songs, die sich anhören als würden sie direkt aus den 80ern kommen. Alte Helden wie die Angry Samoans oder Circle Jerks stehen ebenso Pate wie aktuelle Combos um Dean Dirg oder Sniffing Glue, ohne dass Lights out! einfach nur zur nächsten Kopie verkommen. Hier gibt es wunderbar dreckige, überdrehte und ungestüme Punkrock-Songs, die so herrlich direkt rausgerotzt werden, dass es eine wahre Freude ist. Die Platte teilen sie mit ihren Freunden von der ''High Society'' in Nürnberg, die musikalisch in die gleiche Kerbe schlagen, inzwischen aber komplett in deutsch singen. Auch hier sind Black Flag, Reagan Youth und stellenweise auch die Wipers eine Referenz und auch hier gibt es trotzdem die nötige Eigenständigkeit. Punkrock der Güteklasse A mit Ausflügen in Richtung Hardcore und Skatecore, der wunderbar powervoll und direkt rüberkommt. Die Platte kommt mit geilem Old-School-Artwork inklusive farbigem Vinyl, Posterbeilage, Gravuren und Textblatt. |

Places’ they have a desire to jump right into the whole, guitars and amps in tow and rock the hell out. Taking the song structures and style of Pavement and infusing it with the electrical buzzes and over-production of Khonnor or Tunng, they have perfected quite a lovely sound. The blend of styles works very well for them and the resulting tracks are summery and addictive without ever becoming irritating. An interesting move for the London-based Highpoint Lowlife label – and one which doesn't go unnoticed. Recommended. |

Die Totengräber des Rock`n`Roll sind zurück. nicht dass sie ihn gerne zu Grabe tragen, nein, vielmehr geht es darum, dem alten Mann ein würdiges letztes Geleit zu geben, damit er wieder wie der Phönix aus der Asche aufsteigen kann … wie schon so oft. Aber dafür ist das Lounge Quartet’ nicht zuständig. sie geben, wie gesagt, ein warmes, melancholisches, nicht depressives letztes Geleit. Den Auftakt macht “Engelberg”, zum Wachwerden, und dann beginnen sie auch schon ironisch zu werden: “Bad way”, eine Geschichte über gemeinsames Trinken und Feiern, und ist mit dem Protagonisten nicht der R`n`R gemeint? Etwas altersschwach, aber treu bis zum Schluss … Weiter geht’s mit “Black pool”, ein weiteres staubtrockenes Stück, klar, filigran und morbide … “Ein Wort” ist dann der sehnsüchtige Höhepunkt: Komm und erlöse mich – dunkel, düster und endlos grausam, in dieser Stimmung bleibt’s dann auch bei “James” ... Ab hier geht’s langsam wieder bergauf: “Gift”, vielleicht ihr bis dato schönstes Stück, ein theatralisches Opus, schwer und verspielt zugleich, groß und dicht … Jetzt erden die Töne wieder versöhnlicher und die bekannte Liquidsche Verrücktheit schlägt bei dem crazy Dub “Allnighter” durch. Und dann wollen sie ihm doch noch mal ein Denkmal setzen: “Rock`n`Roll resurrection”, so klassisch, so voll Herz, so inbrünstig, dass von Elvis bis Cave, von Haley bis zu den White Stripes alle mit einsteigen würden! Zeit zum Aussteigen und Ausklingen … Eine perfekte After Hour Scheibe, die alles zuspitzt, was das Quartett in den letzten Jahre geschaffen hat. Klar, eigenständig und musikalisch perfekt, schwermütig und trotzdem mit einem ironisches Lächeln auf dem Gesicht. Musik, die Geschichten schreibt, die Bilder entwirft, die klassischer nicht sein könnten. Ein Werk das erneut eine Welt erschafft zwischen Morriconischem/Baldalamentischem Soundtrack und Waitscher Weirdness, das so gnadenlos überzeichnet wie Deadbolt und so authentisch emotional ist wie Cave, das so weit wie Calexico sein kann und so traurig stimmt wie ‚Element of Crime’ (zu ihren besten Zeiten). |

Cool auch die 2 Versionen von “Bridges”, die schon seit Urzeiten zu ihrem Live-Repetoire gehören. das Original ist in einer ganz anderen Version auf ihrer ersten 7” zu finden und so knüpfen sie hier auch an ganz alte Tage an. Nur das Titelstück fällt aufgrund der dezenten Electro-Einlagen etwas aus dem Rahmen. vielleicht ihr “psychedelischstes” Release, aber klar bleibt die Richtung: Suicide oder Trunkenheit. Alles verpackt in ein superschickes Artwork (Danke Pilar) und ist clear Vinyl. Nur als 10” zu haben – nix CD! |

One of the great joys of intoxication is the grand plans you conceive in the inhuman hours of the morning somewhere just past the pint of no return. You and your best friend swear to sell everything you own, emigrate to Cuba to open a bar, swim the Channel, trek to the North Pole pulled only by cats… And then you wake up in the morning, and no more is said of it. Kudos, then to Fabrizio Moretti, for actually following through on a pipe dream after the smoke cleared. When a chance meeting with Rodrigo Amarante, singer of laidback Rio De Janeiro indie rockers Los Hermanos, at a Portugese festival sparked off all kinds of musical masterplans in an all-night ramble marathon, it looked like that was as far as it would go. A year later, though, Amarante was in the US working with Devendra Banhart, and encouraged by mutual friend (and now Fab’s girlfriend) Binki Shapiro, they rented a house in Echo Park and hammered their hazy ideas into reality.‘The Next Time Around’ has a gentle tinge of tropicalia, the laziest of lilts, a kind of cocktail-sipping SoHo Pacific vibe. Amarante’s soothing, sonorous tones, backed by Fab and Binki’s sweet coos, are perfectly hammock-worthy. It’s no Strokes’ day off either; the percussion is self-effacing and minimal.
The loungey groove of ‘Keep Me In Mind’ hints at the lo-fi pop perfection of the Pixies’ ‘Here Comes Your Man’, while ‘Don’t Watch Me Dancing’’s feather-light fingerpicking rolls over your ears like soft waves on a weary shore, slowly trancing out into psychy echo. Unlike Fab’s bandmate Albert Hammond Jr, you sense his side-project doesn’t spring from any long-held ambition or burning need to express himself; while the initial seeds of the songs were his, he’s very much in the back seat. Without him, of course, there’s no way this release would get so much attention, but its casual easiness is most of its charm. This is an album, after all, that’s named after the cocktail bar down the road.
And it’s a sound that doesn’t need to try too hard; ‘Unattainable’, sung by Shapiro, recalls Mama Cass’ ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’ as imagined by Cat Power, while on ‘Brand New Start’, Amarante finds an Adam Green-ish slacker crooner air.Here’s to idle dreaming then; Little Joy might not quite have built a castle in the sky, but they’ve constructed a cosy little corner in our hearts.

Gegründet 2005 in Detroit haben die Jungs in Guz` Startrackstudio zu Schaffhausen (CH) in nur zwei Tagen ihr Debüt Canned Candies eingespielt. Entstanden ist eine hoch energetische Mischung aus Soul, Trash, Noise und Pop. Simples Songwriting, frische Melodien, ab und an ein gut überlegtes textliches oder musikalisches Zitat, und immer reichlich Groove in Fingern und Beinen. das sind die Zutaten, die sie stets in Orgel, Bass, Schlagzeug Minimalbesetzung umsetzten. Die Farfisa klingt hier nach sixties, erzeugt dort sphärische Klänge und setzt anderswo ganz aus, während Chrisi cool erzählt, schludrig singt oder gar in Hysterie zu verfallen scheint. Stan und Dan halten die Chose derweil mit verzerrtem Bass und stets treibenden Drums am Rollen, während man von retro futuristischen Soundeffekten ans Set eines 60er Jahre Science Fiction Films gerufen wird. Ob die poppige Lovestory ''Trailer girl'', das ausufernde Indie Noise Epos ''I went on down'' oder die Liebeserklärung an den Soul ''Sweet soul music''. Das Lo Fat Orchestra kramt sich charmant und immer sexy durch die Musikgeschichte und hat seine Schnittmenge zwischen Joy Division, der Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, den Dirtbombs, Velvet Underground oder Sonic Youth gefunden. Insgesamt 10 Songs, rund 40 Minuten Spielzeit. |

Und so klingt das Ganze eben nicht simple nach Garage, vielmehr geht es hier in der Hauptsache um Groove, im Detail um einen schönen kleinen musikgeschichtlichen Ritt von 60tes Beat zum Soul über Trash, Pop und Noise, gepaart mit unterkühlten New Wave-Beats. Das ist Musik, die man am besten in schmutziger Gesellschaft hört, da wird dein Zimmerchen zur verqualmten Rotlicht-Kellerbar, an deren Theke Bier nur zum nachspülen hochprozentiger Kurzer genutzt wird. Minimalbeat von Existentialisten für Existentialisten. Und keine Angst, hier wird keine Augenwischerei durch recycelte Retrosounds geboten, vielmehr filtrieren Lo Fat Orchestra die Essenz aus den einzelnen Stilrichtungen und führen diese zusammen und das macht „Questions for honey“ spannend bis zur letzten Note. |

After being occupied with solo & band projects, Florian Kmet & Stefan Németh met again last ye
to record ‘Transition’, their second album after ‘7 Million’ on their own Mosz records in 2005.
• Stefan Nemeth is a member of Radian and has collaborated with
Martin Siewert, Werner Dafeldecker, Christian Fennesz and
Florian Hecker. He is also the co-founder of the Mosz label.
• Florian Kmet is a member of Superloop and has worked with
Martin Brandlmayr, Woflgang Miterer, Gunter Schneider,
Max Nagi, Franz Hautzinger, Ludwig Bekic and Jorge
Sanchez-Chiong.
• Both Nemeth and Kmet are major players in the avant-
electronic music scene and have a cultish underground following.
• ‘Transition’ as an album has a strong feeling of space and depth. It
is expansive and yet detailed. For Kmet and Németh the concept of
the album, the openness, was not a thesis from which the album was
created, but a binding theme that evolved with the album - “I could
compare it to a panoramic view, where you can overview a landscape
or town in a wide angle - you move along the horizon - you stop and
capture a small detail, then you move on”, says Németh. It is an
exceptional view and one of rare beauty. ‘Transition’ will appeal to
fans of John Zorn, AMM and other avant-garde musicians of that
ilk. |

Los Dolares stammen aus Venezuela und machen genau die Art rasenden Hardcore, den man aus Südamerika gewohnt ist. Los Dolares haben allerdings noch einen deutlicheren Anarcho Punk Einschlag und auch einen ausgeprägten Hang zu längeren Spoken Words Passagen, die von Akustikgitarren untermalt werden. Ergibt somit ein stimmiges Album, das ich stilistisch irgendwo zwischen Los Crudos und Conflict einordnen würde. Was kommt dabei heraus, wenn man CREAM & PAPPOS BLUES, HENDRIX & COLOR HUMANO oder CREAM & TAPIMAN zusammen einsperrt, und sie mit allem, was man so braucht, versorgt, natürlich eine fantastische DoppelCD. Hier treffen Los Sounds De Krauts auf den Corsario Negro und veranstalten bei einem Song von 18 Minuten Länge den Toba Trance. Die anderen 3 Songs, von denen jeder über 23 Minuten Spielzeit hat, gestalten Los Natas alleine. Gewohnt psychedelisch rockend, ausufernd gut. Eher Richtung Toba Trance, als Corsario Negro, bzw. nicht ganz so hart.
This is something special for all COLOUR HAZE and LOS NATAS fans among us! In 2003 the two bands met in Munich to play some gigs together. They also went into the studio together to jam and record this unique double CD. Think CREAM meets PAPPOS BLUES, HENDRIX meets COLOR HUMANO or CREAM & TAPIMAN. Vertont mit dem Intuitiv-Recording-Programm GarageBand, einer Westerngitarre, einem alten Casio VL-Tone, diversen Kinderinstrumenten und abschließender Hilfe von Alaska Winter. |
