The debut release from FatCat’s latest signing, ‘Low Files Tropical’ is a great introduction to Get Back Guinozzi! - a double-A-sided single offering up two summery shots of vibrantly colourful and quirky, outsider pop.
The lead track neatly sets out their stall, with singer Eglantine Gouzy’s doubled-up vocal, jangling guitars and a scuzzy pitch-shifting keyboard buzz rippling around a thick, dubbed-up drumbeat, and a brief, coo-ing vocal bridge nodding towards Animal Collective. Eglantine describes the track as “it's the story of a monk I met when I was travelling in India 10 years ago. He was ‘half monk, half junky’, looked like David Bowie in the video ‘China Girl’ and was on his way to a monastery. When we parted at Bombay railway station, we decided to send tourist postcards of sunsets and sunrises to each other, a sort of game. When I finally came back to France I received 100 sunset poscards from him, with beautiful, strange high poetry on the back.“
‘Low Files Tropical’ is ably backed with a brilliantly punchy, bubbly version of the classic, much-covered ‘Police and Thieves’ which - complete with kazoo solo - perhaps owes more to Junior Murvin’s original than The Clash’s best known version.
Now a 5-piece band based between London and the South of France, Get Back Guinozzi! comprises a unique blossoming of hybrid sources – infectiously poppy, quirky and breezy, with a strong French slant and a wide range of influences taking in the likes of Talking Heads, The Feelies, The Smiths, early B-52's, King Sunny Adé, Lee Perry, Rip Rig and Panic, Ariel Pink, The Slits, The Cure, Animal Collective, Jonathan Richman, and Serge Gainsbourg. Infused with the exoticism of reggae, dub, African music, Tropicalia, and Cambodian music from the '60s, the breadth of sources it draws on, allied to its singer’s skewed narratives and heavily-inflected English, give the project a distinctive individuality.
Driven by French friends, guitarist Fred Landini and singer Eglantine Gouzy (with whom FatCat have been talking for some time, having posted three of her solo tracks on our online demo archive back in 2004), the band began with Fred composing fifteen brief tracks for a contemporary dance company, using a minimal set up of a guitar, rhythm box, and a single keyboard sound. Having collaborated together on some previous material, Fred sent London-based Eglantine some of this instrumental material to work on, and the pair were so excited by the results that they decided to form a band. More tracks were sent across the internet, with Eglantine adding vocals, keyboards, percussion and odd electronics, until a full album worth of material emerged. A five-piece band was formed with the addition of Regis Laugier (bass), Luc Benito (drums) and Fabrice Giuisiano (guitar, keyboard), and GBG played their debut shows in September 2008.
Singing “English in a baboon style” (with lyrical meaning often partially obsured), Fred describes Eglantine's lyrics as being replete with fantasy and a kind of dark humor. "It's Eglantine's view of the world. It's an attempt at Zouk or tropical music with these lyrics that are a little bit spooky." Influenced by singers like Ari Up (The Slits), Pygmies, Laurie Anderson, Serge Gainsbourg, Allison Staton (Young Marble Giants) and Donna Summer, Eglantine likes "to imagine my own little movies where I can be different characters. I can make doubles of myself, I can transform myself - a real schizophrenic, sometimes within the same track."
Following some time out after the birth this Spring of Eglantine's first child, Get Back Guinozzi! are set to undertake their first proper bout of live touring this Autumn. The band's debut album (‘Carpet Madness’) will be released on October 26th. |

Naturverliebte Melancholie eines belgischen Künstlerkollektivs - und dennoch geht's nur ums Abhauen. Dabei ist "Plan Your Escape" eigentlich viel zu schön, um Eskapismus zu predigen.
Hört man die Folk-Popmelodien von Girls In Hawaii, ziehen sofort wunderbare Landschaften vor dem inneren Auge vorbei. Geht gar nicht anders. 2004 traten die Belgier mit ihrem Debüt "From Here To There" zum ersten Mal in unser virtuelles Bewusstsein. Nach einer ausgiebigen Konzertreise quer durch Europa kehrten sie erschöpft nach Brüssel zurück und brauchten erst einmal eine kleine Auszeit, um sich klarzumachen, was genau sie wollten. Fast ein Jahr dauerte es, bis sie sich entschieden, eine neue Platte aufzunehmen und den Weg als Vollzeitmusiker einzuschlagen. Osteuropäische Einflüsse, einsame Mandolinen und Kinderreim-Gesang ("Couples On TV") machen dabei auch das zweite Album zu etwas ganz Besonderem. Unterwasser-Glockenspiele ("Coral"), jede Menge Geräuschelemente und zufällige Begebenheiten wie Regen, Hundegebell, das Läuten der Kirchturmuhr ("Plan Your Escape") oder Radiofrequenzen aus dem Verstärker ("Road To Luna") erschaffen eine traumhafte Akustik-Kulisse, schwerelos und energisch zugleich. Die Band war schon immer sehr naturverbunden, Blumenkinder inklusive Verzerrer. |

Golden Triangle, out of Memphis but lately residing in Brooklyn, make the kind of fuzzy, female-fronted garage rock that is not exactly scarce these days. The energy level on Double Jointer (their first full-length after a string of singles and an EP on Mexican Summer) is high, and that goes a long way. Still, it’s not clear that there’s much here besides raw energy. The production values are low and many of the songs aren’t much more than a shout, a riff and a muffled Bo Diddley beat. The songs are fun in a fizzy, party-in-a-box, ephemeral way, but nowhere near as interesting as those of similarly structured (part-female, double-guitared, 1960s-inspired) Fresh & Onlys.
What sets Golden Triangle apart is a certain willingness to experiment with guitars and feedback, a la Sonic Youth (most apparent on extended closer “Arson Wells”), and a spooky, vaguely gothic overlay. “Blood and Arrow,” early on, sets the tone with horror-house keyboards, the riff reverberating in disturbing ways as the notes slide up and down the scales. “Neon Noose,” the single, is a queasy combination of driving, four-thwacking punk drums and loosely harmonized vocals. It’s like the Shirelles, woken up at 4 in the morning to sing in front of a jackhammer, a weird mix of urgency and slackness.
The album gets better as it goes along, riding a barrage of 16th notes in “Rollercoaster,” and approximating the unearthly fuzz of Michael Dracula in “The Melting Wall.” “Jinx,” last but one, is a pretty good shouter that culminates in the chorus, “This is my life so far.” As lyrics go, it’s not a revelation. But maybe it’s a hint at what’s going on here — a work in progress that sizzles with energy but lives only in the moment.
As a statement of where the band is now, Double Jointer works reasonably well. But what do they think, what do they hope for, where do they want to go? It’s not clear that they’ve even considered it.

Das 90er Album wieder aufgelegt. “Fuck you ! Punk Rock ! Die Kunst des Freischaufelns.Die dritte und vierte Platte der Goldenen Zitronen gelten in der Bandgeschichte als die Übergangsplatten von der Fun Punk Rasselbande zur explizit politischen Band. Einerseits lassen sich in den Texten zum ersten Mal einige ernst gemeinte Aussagen und das Reagieren auf politische Entwicklungen und Ereignisse erkennen, zum Andern sind die musikalischen Mittel noch bestimmt vom Hernehmen bestimmter Genres aus bis dahin 30 Jahren Popgeschichte. (...) Die Vorbereitungen der LP Fuck You begannen im Sommer 1989. Die Zitronen hatten gerade das Bremer Weser Label verlassen um sich aus dem Dunstkreis ungebrochen komischer Bands wie den Mimmies zu lösen. Die Avancen verschiedener Major Labels und der Bravo, die zu jener Zeit händeringend einen Nachfolge Act für die sich aufgelösten Ärzte suchten, hatte man in den Wind geschlagen. Beide Platten erschienen beim Berliner Vielklang Label. In der Gesellschaft von Bands wie den Lolitas und den Stragemen fühlten sich die Zitronen wohler. Die Platte wurde im Zeitraum von sechs Monaten an fünf verschiedenen Orten aufgenommen. (...) Die Platte (kommt) daher wie ein Stilmix aus 60s Beat (Die chinesische Schubkarre, Eversex), spät 60er-Jahre-Velvet-Underground-Haftigkeit (Groove, Laila), 70er Jahre Rock (L´amour á trois, Brennstoff) und 70er Jahre Easy listenig (Lindenstreet). Inklusive der Weiterführung älterer Stränge im Zitronenuniversum: Von Country u. Rock a Billy (Exile Cowboy , Hängt Joe) und der Punktradition der späten 70er Jahre (Schmeiß es weg, Mein Girl…). (...) Die Botschaft Fuck You hatte drei verschiedene Adressaten. Zum einen die Major Labels. Auf dem Plattencover sieht man die Zitronen Mitglieder als böse Blumen verkleidet die Schallplatten der damals größten Labels CBS, Phonogram und EMI anfressen. Zum anderen erwähnte Deutschtümler. Der Schlusssatz unter den Credits sagt: Deutschland verrecke! Und zum Dritten, wie im Opener der LP, Schmeiß es weg eindeutig benannt: Den dumpfen Teil des eigenen Fun Punk Publikums. Profitiert hat die Platte dennoch vom ursprünglichen Image der Band. Fuck You ist mit 20 000 verkauften Exemplaren in der ersten Woche die am schnellsten verkaufte Zitronenplatte. |

Die einzigen Vorgaben die Childish machte waren: Die Platte muss in drei Tagen eingespielt werden, die Mixe dürfen nicht länger als 30 Minuten dauern. (...) Billy Childish´s erste Handlung im Studio war es mit einem Gafferband die VU´s des Mischpults zu überkleben. Die Pegel der einzelnen Signale wurden nur nach Gehör geregelt. Hinterher stellte sich heraus, dass alle Pegel komplett im roten Bereich standen. So wurden die Zitronensongs, die zu dieser Zeit auf relativ ambitionierten Songwriting beruhten in das raue Gewand einer 60s Gargagen Band gesteckt. Überraschend ist im Goldieskontext vor allem das Bemühen um melodische Komplexität und der ungebrochenere Glaube an die E-Gitarre. Während die meisten Stücke den Strang aus 60s beeinflusster Musik weiterführen, weist der Opener 80 Millionen Hooligans in die Richtung der kommenden Zitronenalben. (...) Die Aufnahmen im kleinen, auf dem Land außerhalb von Rochester gelegenen Redstudio kosteten knappe 500.- €. – In etwa gleich viel wie das anschließende Essen in einem halbseidenen Französischen Feinschmeckerrestaurant. (...)(Nach einer denkwürdigen Tour blieb) eine Denkpause von 3 Jahren und die LP Das bißchen Totschlag auf der die Zitronen sich zum ersten Mal selbst produzierten. Ganz ohne sich um gängige Produktionsstandarts zu kümmern, aber mit genügend Zeit ausgestattet.” |

Here at last, Guapo´s "Black Oni" on handnumbered limited edition 180g white vinyl. Originally released on CD by Mike Patton´s Ipecac Records in 2005, this record is the second in a recondite trilogy which began with "Five Suns" and will be concluded by the release of "Elixirs" on Neurot Recordings in February 2008. Limited to 500 copies.
With this, their sixth album, Guapo have conjured a harrowingly complex and unflinchingly epic piece of work. Heady and hypnotic, driving and relentless, tumultuous and visceral, sonic and serene, the odyssey that is Black Oni encompasses many paradoxes in its massively dynamic scope. Picking up where they left off from their previous Cuneiform Records release Five Suns (2002), the band continue to expand on their palette of dexterous chamber-rock anomalies, modal transcendence, and apocalyptic death marches, and like it's predecessor, Black Oni is one singular piece of music, making it the second record in a trilogy of large-scale symphonic forms. Incorporating elements of prog, avant-garde jazz, kraut-rock, minimalism and a range of folk mediums from Britain to Indonesia, Guapo take their que from a disparate array of influences including Magma, King Crimson, Boredoms, Goblin, Sun Ra, Charlemagne Palestine, Univers Zero, This Heat, Olivier Messiaen and Popol Vuh. The assembly of Dave Smith's explosive drum assaults, Matt Thompson's brazen and prowling bass throb, and Daniel O'Sullivan's ethereal keyboard reveries telepathically collide in an augury of rich and cinematic musical ceremony. Black Oni is Guapo's most monumentally unreserved offering to date.
