Schon etwas länger auf dem Markt und bislang in irgendwelchen Schubladen vergraben, aber jetzt ans Licht gezerrt und desto heftiger ans Herz gelegt: The Falcon 5 und ihre Debüt- EP. Ein Tusch! Das gute Stück aus dem Frühjahr 2007 führt uns eine Viertelstunde über Stock und Stein und zeigt, wie hübsch hysterisch und variantenreich Spielereien zwischen Noiserock und Jazzcore immer noch sein können. Wo Einflüsse wie George Clinton und Thin Lizzy genannt werden, da lässt es sich ohnehin aushalten - obwohl hier sicher vor allem Refused, dem SST-Backkatalog und der in den Achtzigern entstandenen Fusion aus Funk und Hardcore gelauscht wurde. Der Labelchef fühlt sich gar an die just auferstandenen Krachmacher Les Savy Fav erinnert - gut, der ist sicher parteiisch, liegt aber in der Sache nicht wirklich daneben. Einer der Falken greift gerne zum Rotwein/Cola-Gemisch, damit ist aber auch schon die einzige ersichtliche Geschmacksentgleisung benannt. Das hibbelige Quartett aus Mainfranken macht Appetit auf mehr. ihm sei gutes Gelingen gewünscht in einer Zeit, wo das Muckertum in Gestalt von Mars Volta sogar die Charts heimsucht. Und wer seine Bühnenkarriere auf einem „Endzeitfestival“ beginnt und dort sogleich für Messerstechereien sorgt, rollt das Feld ja ohnehin von hinten auf.“ |

kai althoff, better known for his internationally renowned work in fine arts and his band "workshop" (releases for labels like sonig, ladomat, l'age d'or, captain trip and finlayson) has released his second soloalbum under the pseudonym "fanal"." "the second fanal album is released, and as you might know, the man behind is kai althoff. it features some extraordinary, almost brutally nasty pieces about eviction and deportation as well as a song about the instructions of a sexually obsessed man. there are almost always vocals, and none of them are nice or pleasing. one of the songs now is so german, so don't fool about it now and listen, follow the example: "he is not stupid, the german." the music is guitar, bass, synthesizer, drum computer and vocals, as already mentioned. to me it seems to be rather a vehicle to emphasise the words. the rhythm is always faster, apart from the track "mit den hunden" (with the dogs). and finally fanal poses the question: what does it mean to have a mother? one's values are dismantled, taken apart and replaced by aggression... it's fanal again, heralding a fight by physical as well as mental means. for some this music is only distinguished by its nastiness, but they'll find that all they can hope for is an hour of gentle reckoning..." Out of the Berlin school of minimalism and stripped bare cold metal rhythm comes the new batch of tracks from Fenin.
Although he quotes his influences as The Disciples and Dub Syndicate, these tracks have far more in common with the abstract sounds that very early ON-U Sound produced, such as The Missing Brazilians album "War zone". They are also reminiscent of seminal Cabaret Voltaire industrial cut -ups, such as the cold soundscapes of "Slugging For Jesus" -- now made available once more after years of deletion on Soul Jazz compilation, "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" --, or early Muslim Gauze tracks.
All these comparisons are good pointers: If you are interested in the above artists, you'll probably find these Fenin tunes interesting.
Fenin is by all accounts a young artist, and on the evidence presented here he does show promise for the future. These are deceptively simple constructions, but on further listening, offer complex rhythm patterns to involve the mind -- At their best, these tracks aspire to the paradoxical complexity of Steve Reich's album "Drumming", in which basic percussion patterns build up into sophisticated structures.
The simple one-word titles express the bareness and austerity of the sound: simple yet evocative.
A possible objection could be that some of the compositions at points seem to self consciously take too much from the stripped down Basic Channel/Rhythm and Sound/Paul St Hilaire style. Over all though, Fenin has avoided all the more obvious clichés of his chosen genre -- recommended for those of you into cold and very urban minimalism. |

This is a true forgotten classic. Out of the great San Francisco acid wave, bassist Louis “Cork” Marcheschi — along with husband and wife, guitarist and Slick vocalist David and Nancy Blossom, bonus guitarist Larry Evans, and Kim Kimsey on drums — produced but one album in 1967, then basically faded away into normalcy. At the time, critic Ralph J. Gleason said, “I don’t know if they’re immature or premature.” I believe history has proven them to be the latter. While the razor-bladed blues rock fuzz and love laden “I’m just trying to free my mind” lyricism may have been par for the course for that era, the Blossom’s jazz influences met with Marcheschi’s homemade Radiophonic synths and Theremins to create a sound tragically ahead of its time. Acid Mothers Temple makes a decent living these days doing basically the same thing, touring with a Roland synth, but, since Cork made his own, the aural electricity smothering Cauldron in space sounds is just too fantastically dirty and totally original.
Each Doctor Who warp and UFO multidimensional warble is a Technicolor snowflake caught in a notion where time is no longer relevant, totally unable to be absorbed by a mind without blowing it. These remarkable noises augment a solid base of haphazard prog-blues and Nancy’s dispassionate vocals to make an undeniably classic and deservedly legendary LP, easily on par with the greatest works from the Elephant 6 catalogue or anyone who played at the only good Woodstock. I can see why the ’60s generation may not have dug it, though. The synthetic opening “And After” sounds like a broken stylus making a feeble impression of a healthy needle as it digs deeper and deeper into the virgin vinyl. Many copies were probably returned on this notion, let alone the fact this is the next level shit today. When this album came out, it was like showing a Shatner-era Star Trek fan The Matrix. They couldn’t really form a full idea as to what they really had in front of them. You sure missed out, 1967.

Now imagine that all started 25 years ago,and you never even heard of the band responsible - until now. The band is the FLASHCUBES - the great lost power-pop group of the 70?s, an act now rightly referred to as ''legendary'' by pundits who know what they?re talking about. And now, the FLASHCUBES are back, with a brand new studio album with the self descriptive title ''Brilliant!''. The band started in 1977 in Syracuse, NY recorded just two singles, including one of thee power-pop classics ''Christi girl'' and sadly broke up in 1980. Through the years their legend grew and by the early 90?s more people had heard of the FLASHCUBES than had ever actually heard them.When RHINO RECORDS included ''Christi girl'' on a power-pop retrospective called ''Come out and play'', the FLASHCUBES decided it was time to live up to their legend. The band released a CD anthology called ''Bright lights'' in 1997 and hit the road again and played in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles and even Japan, where they recorded an amazing live document called ''Raw power-pop - Live in Japan'' which was released later on AIR MAIL RECORDINGS. The album shows the band as energetic and invigorating as they were when they used to share the stage withthe RAMONES, the JAM, the RUNAWAYS, the ROMANTICS and the POLICE. That pointis brought home with ''Brilliant!'', the first real studio album of the FLASHCUBES? long brilliant career. Bursting out 12 new original tunes,''Brilliant!'' makes the case that not only were the FLASHCUBES one of the greatest power-pop groups to make the scene in the late 70?s, they?re still one of the very best around. An opening cover of the EDDIE & THE HOT RODS classics ''Do anything you wanna do'' serves as both a statement of intent and agauntletthrown. Who could resist such a powerful call to arms? Bereits mit seinem Debüt Prärie D'Amour (2003) gelang dem Hamburger Singer / Songwriter FLO FERNANDEZ ein glänzender und von lobenden Kritiken begleiteter Einstieg in die heimische Indieszene. Seitdem arbeitete der Musiker konsequent, kompromisslos und mit dem ihm eigenen Zeitverständnis an seinen neuen Kompositionen, die nun - von seinen Fans bereits sehnsüchtig erwartet - auf dem Label DIAN RECORDINGS erscheinen. Der Höllenapfel musste eben lange schmoren, bis er so teuflisch gut schmeckte. Flying Lotus is a free spirit, “I have this beautiful lemon tree in my backyard, and on a sunny day the light shines through. Little
things like that inspire me.” A Coltrane through and through, Flying Lotus is the great-nephew of Alice Coltrane and a cousin of
Ravi Coltrane. “My greatest influences are my family, I’m lucky to have been around so many accomplished musicians.” And most
importantly, Flying Lotus is a visionary, so get ready to meet your favorite new producer.
1983 is the first full-length album from Flying Lotus, originally released on Plug Research in 2006. The album was an introduction
for most to a sound that connected the fractured, funky soul of Dilla and Madlib to the more psychedelic downtempo of Daedelus,
Nobody and other kindred spirits. In the years since this release, the Southern California scene has coalesced, and Lotus has
continued his genre synthesis, working with UK dubstep producer Kode9, among others. This is bass music that gets tagged
‘experimental’ because it pushes boundaries, but felt live, there’s no doubting the direct, physical impact it has on an audience.
While the title 1983 may conjure images of parachute pants and asymmetrical ‘dos, the ‘83 Lotus envisions isn’t the typical retro
cheese covered by VH1 specials. This is Blade Runner, Bambaataa, the Bomb Squad, and Basquiat. This is the musical future
Prince was dreamin’ about. |

Lex records are owning things right now, what with bagging the incredible Dangerdoom collaboration, the upcoing Ghostface joint and Subtle's latest, it's good to see them leaving enough space for the ever-brilliant Andrew Broder and his Fog moniker. ‘Loss Leader’ keeps to Broder's delicate mix of skewed acoustic songs and clever production, though the A side malfunctions with a noisy jam that could sound just as easily at home on a Dead Machines record, very unusual. It’s the flipside that’s getting me hot and bothered though, a killer continuation of the album with ‘10th Avenue Freakout Pt. 2’ and a gorgeous electronic instrumental ‘Shdws/Scrns’. Very very good indeed and hopefully a sign that there's more material on the way. Ace.

Freddy Fischer ist der Anwalt der gebrochenen Herzen. Seine Lieder sind Balsam für die Wunden unglücklich verliebter Menschen. Die Mittel, die er und die unglaublich gut aussehende Cosmic Rocktime Band dazu verwenden, kommt aus der Tiefe ihrer Herzen. Der Groove, der Funk und die Liebe zum Tanz bringen jeden Saal zu kochen. 100 Augen oder 200 - ach 1000 - heften sich an die gelb getönte Glasbrille wenn Freddy Fischer die Treppe herunter zum Publikum empor steigt und leicht nervös seine Finger auf die Tastatur der Hammondorgel senkt, um somit Klangteppiche auf die Ohren der Staunenden zu hauen. Alles ist O.K. wenn sich die Discokugel dreht. Und die Discokugel, sie dreht sich bis zur Ekstase. Live Shows von Freddy Fischer hinterlassen eine Republik im Discofieber. Die Gigs waren schnell in aller Munde und die Leute, die Freddys Show live sahen, litten noch Tage danach an unwillkürlichen Zuckungen und unkontrollierbarem Speichelfluss und schrien in ihren schlaflosen Nächten Textfragmente wie »Tanz, Freddy, tanz!« und »Baby oh, oh, oh, du bist hip und ich sowieso«. Selbst »schwieriges« Publikum konnte Fischer mit seiner Band nach wenigen Minuten wiederbeleben. Die Lahmen konnten plötzlich wieder tanzen, die Tauben warfen ihre Hörgeräte ab. Die Impotenten und Frigiden spürten zwar – nach verlässlichen Angaben – keine Regung, hatten aber wieder mal gelacht. Nur um Fischer selber muss man sich Sorgen machen. Er verausgabt sich derart an die Discobeats, dass neuerdings auf Grund feuerpolizeilicher Anordnung ein Defibrillator bei der Tournee mitgeführt werden muss. Fischer gibt alles, springt spastische Sprünge ins Publikum wie Rudi Nurejew in seiner Endphase. Er zeigt erstmals, wie man richtig zu Discomusik tanzt. Wer es noch nicht kann, hat mit Freddy die Chance, John Travolta etwas näher zu kommen. |

Wenn ein Bandname auch nach 27 Jahren zum Plattentitel taugt, kann mit der Karriere nicht so viel schief gelaufen sein. So ist „Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle“ nicht nur das zwölfte Album der Band aus München, sondern auch ein weiteres Puzzleteil in ihrem sich stets ändernden Selbstbild. Wer hier ein authentisches Künstlersubjekt finden will, sucht vergebens, es steht nicht mal mehr ein Sänger im Mittelpunkt. Die Projektionsflächen sind andere, so etwa die dominikanische Schwulenikone Maria Montez oder der Proto-Diskosänger Sylvester.
F.S.K. haben sich auf „Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle“ erneut neu erfunden, nach der Post-Wave-Phase zu Beginn der 80er, der Polkazeit mit David Lowery und der fast textlosen, trackorientierten Disko-B-Ära schlagen FSK mit dieser Platte das nächste Kapitel ihrer Geschichte auf. Formal wieder songorientierter, versucht man, die digitalen Beats des zeitgenössischen R&B in den eigenen Bandkontext zu übersetzen.

Keyboardhips like \\\"Frosch\\\" and eggpelvis with mangoflowers on electric eel - \\\"intergalactic Radio\\\" rush along like niped balloons, that rub on pantyhose while Rupert and Droet master the most bizarr situations on Planet Egmond.
