Info
Highlands is an album of bittersweet cosmic campfire electronics and melancholic dreams. Song-writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Damon Aaron, pens love songs and personal anecdotes that float over spacey hip hop beats and polished bass-lines. He cuts and pastes-in swirling strings and acoustic guitars that decorate his minimal sound-scapes and cast light on traditional folk and songwriting roots.
Aaron is an eclectic musician who equally embodies California craftsman, Renaissance man, and soul boy. His late-night collection of stories directs nods to Massive Attack, Flying Lotus, Nick Drake and Sam Cooke. However, Aaron’s musical path towards Highlands began a long ago, at home, with a unique mix of family influences. He learned his finger-picking style from a banjo-wielding Scots-Irish grandfather. He grew-up singing folk and bluegrass with his Mom. And his step-Dad, an-early 1980’s KROQ DJ, showed him how to program synthesizers. Such an eclectic mix of musical habits is evident in the opening tracks “Matinee” and “Fire” where dubby finger snaps and keyboard washes are building blocks for songs eventually heightened by walls of violins and breathy-flutes. Later, on “Fall”, the acoustics take center stage but glitchy-clicks sneak in to add just a sniff of electronic atmospherics, while on “Better” Aaron’s vocals emerge from a heavy sheen of synthesizer to ride a shuffling beat.
“It\'s idiosyncratic, sometimes dense, and takes some slightly unexpected turns. It\'s a record that probably takes a couple listens to take in,” explains Aaron. “Like Tom Waits said, \"it\'s an emotional weather report\" with bluesy love songs, laments, and conversations.”
Helping Aaron edit together the right balance of organics and electronics are Los Angeles-based peers Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (arranger and session player to the likes of Dr. Dre, Rihanna, Gnarls Barkley, Blank Blue, Lifeforce Trio), percussionist Andres Renteria, and horn players Matt Demerritt and Michael McDaniel who have played alongside Macy Gray and Nate Morgan respectively.
Throughout the 1990’s, Aaron led soul and hip-hop bands in Los Angeles singing and MC-ing, and played guitar for others like the Breakestra, The Rebirth and seminal hip-hop artist Divine Styler. He\'s been nominated for a Gilles Peterson\'s Worldwide winners and LA Weekly music awards. He\'s also been featured on several influential compilations including: Rewind!3 (Ubiquity), Dublab Presents: Freeways (Emperor Norton), Impeach The Precedent (Kajmere) and Broadcasting (Sonar Kolectiv). Outside of solo work he has worked with groups like Build An Ark, Najite and the Olokun Prophecy, and has collaborated with critically acclaimed electronic artists like Telefon Tel Aviv and Barbara Morgenstern. Watch for shows this Fall to celebrate the release of the album. Just as Highlands is a hybrid of styles Aaron expects the live performances to balance live musicianship with electronics and visual elements. |

Nach der ersten Single, einer Split 7inch und einem Samplerbeitrag kommt hier endlich das Debütalbum von Danse Macabre. Im Vergleich mit ihren älteren Releases schafft die Band es nochmals sich zu steigern. Wild ausbrechende Blasts mit unverkennbaren metallischen Anleihen wechseln mit ruhigen, depressiven Passagen gepaart mit teils manisch geschrienen als auch gesprochenen Gesang. Dabei bleiben die Jungs aus Trier immer unberechenbar und chaotisch. Der Vergleich mit Orchid und Co drängt sich zwangsläufig auf. Die Texte sind dabei in deutsch und sehr selbst- bzw gesellschaftskritisch gehalten. Schickes Artwork und ein zum Poster aufklappbares Booklet runden dieses gute Debüt entsprechend ab. |

Und Danse Macabre werden immer besser irgendwie... Nicht nur wird der DM-typisch geprägte Sound imemr ausgereifter, sondern finden sich auch immer mehr Einflüsse in Richtung Uranus in den Songs der Jungs aus Trier wieder. Mit den 3 Songs auf Seite A der 7'' setzen sie auf die Erwartungen nach der letzten Split nochmal einen drauf, wobei hier besonders der zweite Titel, ''Schon ok irgendwie...'' herausstechen dürfte.Die B-Seite gehört hiermit den - mittlerweile nicht mehr existierenden - Belgiern von Am I Dead Yet, und auch die lassen es sich in ihren 3 Songs nicht nehmen, gekonnt die Elemente des klassischen Mid 90s Screamo mit aktuellem Soundgewand zu verknüpfen - mit den letzten 3 Songs auf dieser Split hinterlassen die 4 Belgier folglich ein ein würdiges musikalisches Erbe. Die 7'' kommt in einer wunderschönen falthülle, wieder von DM Gitarrist Stefan Weyer entworfen |

Amphetamin ist als Pharmazeutikum die normalste Sache der Welt: Kinder und Soldaten bekommen Amphetaminpräparate legal zugeteilt, um zu leisten, was von ihnen erwartet wird. Als Chrystal Meth alias Pep, Yaba oder Speed hingegen wird es als »Killerdroge« für den jüngsten Anstieg an HIV-Infektionen verantwortlich gemacht und gilt bei Politikern als größte Bedrohung der USA.
Das Buch stellt die schillernde Wirkung dieser Droge in ihrem Zwiespalt dar, indem es die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Amphetamin vom späten 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart nacherzählt, von seiner extremen Leistungssteigerung bis zur schnellen Abhängigkeit und Zerstörung.
Durch die Ausleuchtung der gesellschaftlichen, kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhänge wird deutlich, warum das ehemalige Asthmamittel von der deutschen Wehrmacht als Stimulans für Soldaten genutzt werden konnte und nach Kriegsende als erstes Antidepressivum vermarktet wurde.
Detailliert untersucht der Autor den Einfluss der Droge auf die Arbeiten von Künstlern wie Judy Garland, Philip K. Dick, Jean Paul Sartre, Andy Warhol, Elvis Presley oder Johnny Rotten. Hans-Christian Dany, geboren 1966 in Hamburg. Künstler, Autor, Kurator, Berater. Lebt in Hamburg. Studium der Freien Kunst an der HfbK Hamburg. Seit 1989 zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen in Büchern, Katalogen und internationalen Zeitschriften, u.a. in Springerin, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Texte zur Kunst, Vogue, Die Beute. For those of us fortunate enough to be acquainted with De Rosa’s 2006 debut ‘Mend’, the wait for album number two has been arduous and seemingly interminable, thirty months is a long time by anyone’s standards but given their lead singer’s aspirations, it was unlikely that the album was going to be rushed. Finally complete and packaged with original artwork by Glasgow’s literary titan Alasdair Gray, ‘Prevention’ builds on the promise of their debut and goes some way towards establishing De Rosa as one of the most accomplished and (dare we say it) cerebral bands writing today. It’s certainly been a long wait, but for many, ‘Prevention’ will be one of the anticipated releases of 2009.
De Rosa’s strengths lie in their ability to fashion unforgettable melodies from unconventional song structures, Henry’s contemplative, vivid lyrics - often referencing local areas from his native Lanarkshire – tend to linger in the memory long after the music has faded, which, given the scarcity of genuinely affecting music nowadays, ought to elevate De Rosa to the ranks of Scotland’s finest songwriters. Following the critical acclaim heaped on their debut (one of MOJO’s Albums of 2006), and the drafting in of an additional member, the band set about perfecting their unique blend of urban, parochial folk and angular, twisted guitar lines, enhanced considerably this time round with layers of keyboards and electronica. |

Die DEMONICS sind wieder da! Zwar „nur“ mit einem „Best-Of“, aber das hat es bei einer solch sträflich unterbewerteten Ausnahmeband natürlich in sich. 21 Songs aus allen Bandphasen, um genau zu sein. Angefangen mit den Hits der „Formaldehyde Injection“-LP, mit der die Band schon Ende der Neunziger sämtlichen Punk’n’Roll/Horrorpunk-Klischeebands um Lichtjahre voraus war, gefolgt von den Songs der nicht minder genialen Longplayer „Demons On Wheels“ und „Ritual On The Beach“. Und natürlich den Hitsingles, wie das grandiose „Dunebuggy Gang“, mit dem die DEMONICS beweisen, dass sie einfach fast alles können: Punkrock, Rock’n’Roll, Powerpop, Surf plus eine gehörige Portion Humor (dazu sei als Beispiel nur mal der unschlagbare Text von „Regan“ genannt)! Ich will gar nicht mäkeln, ob eventuell hier und da ein Song fehlt, denn insgesamt hat Bandleader Russ eine sehr repräsentative Auswahl getroffen, die sowohl perfekt als Einstiegsdroge geeignet ist als auch für Fans (wie mich) interessant, die schon die meisten DEMONICS-Veröffentlichungen im Schrank stehen haben. Das zuckersüße Cover passt natürlich zum Albumtitel wie Arsch auf Eimer und wahre Liebhaber guter Musik sollten nicht zögern, für die letzten Exemplare des limitierten Vinyls ihre Seele zu verkaufen! Das unvermeidliche Review- Schlusswort kann für mich in diesem Falle nur lauten: Don’t say eight, don’t say nine – say ten! (Ox) |

The debut l.p. from DIANA ROGERSON
Utilising the varied & considerable talents of, amongst ohers, Karl Blake (of SHOCK-HEADED PETERS infamy), the enigmatic Robert Haigh, Tathata Wallis and Sema, and working with the assistance of the much-acclaimed Steven Stapleton, Diana Rogerson (of NURSE WITH WOUND) has nurtured a truly remarkable record which is already being hailed by those who have heard it.
At present working exclusively in the realm of sound, Rogerson first came to light as an "underground" film maker. Her work has been screened at the London Film Makers' Co-Op, I.C.A., Brixton Ritzy, Air Gallery and Sheffield & Hornsey Art Colleges, meeting with widespread acclaim. A video release by CABARET VOLTAIRE's "DOUBLEVISION" label of an anthology of these films is planned for the future. In 1981 she founded FISTFUCK (and later "The Whore"). These uncompromising live acts, working in the area of sex & sleaze, were loud, provocative, extreme, dangerous and funny: sexual parodies were performed to stunned audiences throughout London's nightclubs and galleries, engendering much controversy and accruing a large & loyal following in the process.
Since the demise of The Whore, Rogerson has confined her attentions to music, working with such luminaries as NURSE WITH WOUND, SPK, SHOCK-HEADED PETERS, ANNIE ANXIETY and CURRENT 93, both live and on record. She has also collaborated with JIM FOETUS on a recent NURSE WITH WOUND 12" single, working under the name of Chrystale Quimm. NB: As you may notice, the test pressing isslightly substandard on side II and has since been re-cut & re-pressed. |

Anlässlich eines Auftritts zu Silvester sangen die Mitglieder von \"Doris\" in Kissen hinein, um die Stimmen von Leuten zu erzeugen, die hunderte von Metern entfernt \"Maria\" rufen. Die Kissen stellte sie später aus und konnte sie einem Galeristen für 1500 Mark verkaufen, der allerdings nur 300 anzahlte und dann nicht dazu bewegt werden konnte, weitere Beträge zu überweisen. Als \"Doris\" dann die vermutlich kostspieligen Anzeigen der Galerie in Kunstzeitschriften sah, ließ sie sich nicht länger narren, sondern betrieb produktive Wertvernichtung, indem sie 48 Kissen produzierte und für 250 DM anbot, so dass der Galerist einen \"Wertverlust\" von 50 Mark hatte. |

DIGGER BARNES ist Singer/Songwriter, Performer und Bassist u.a. von Chuck Ragan (HOT WATER MUSIC) und der in den USA dieses Jahr bereits zum zweiten mal stattfindenden REVIVALTOUR. So spielte Barnes in diesem Rahmen bereits für Tim Barry (AVAIL), Ben Nichols (LUCERO), Tom Gabel (AGAINST ME), Frank Turner u.a. Ermuntert von seinen amerikanischen Kollegen erscheint nun mit TIME HAS COME das eigene Debut, ein vielseitiges Americana-Album mit packender, meist düsterer Atmosphäre und einem beeindruckenden musikalischen Spektrum. Ähnlich wie Johnny Cash mit seinen American Recordings, schafft es Barnes so unterschiedliche Einflüsse wie Folk, Indierock, Gospel, Rockabilly, Pop und Country unter einen Hut zu bringen und stilvoll zu verschmelzen. Stampfende Chaingangbeats wechseln sich mit mal swingenden, mal rockenden Uptemponummern ab, dazwischen gibt es melancholische Balladen und auch zwei Instrumentalstücke, die Barnes' Faible für Filmmusiken und Soundcollagen erahnen lassen. If ‘Beyond’ was Dinosaur Jr's return to form, ‘Farm’ is proof that this band continues to deliver rock worth cranking up to 11. At times wholly 70's guitar-epic, at other times perfect for sitting by a babbling brook with Joni and Neil, ‘Farm’ encompasses Dinosaur Jr's signature palette – soaring and distorted guitar, unshakable hooks, honey-rich melodies, with songs that get into your head and, bouncing around happily, stay there. The worry about the reunion of the original Dinosaur Jr. line-up, more than 20 years after their formation and legendary dissolution, was that these guys were just flogging the back catalogue as a marketing gimmick. With the release of ‘Beyond’, in 2007, the band gave a hearty Marshall-driven "F**K YOU!" answer to those inquiring ears. ‘Farm’ was recorded in J.Mascis' Bisquiteen studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, and was produced by Mascis. "Dream Electric" ist ein Monolith von einem Rock-Album. Es steht einfach da, macht betörende Rock-Musik und zaubert einem ein zufriedenes Lächeln aufs Gesicht. Nichts Weltbewegendes, simple, kickende Rock-Songs. Das Einfachste auf der Welt, so scheint es, und darum wohl so gut. So dermassen gut, dass man poetisch wird.
Die Songs riechen nach jungem Liebesglück, nach saftig-grünen Wiesen und frischem Bergwasser, nach heissem Kaffee, duftendem Gebäck. Vor sich ein reichhaltig gedeckter Früstückstisch, an den man sich ausgeschlafen, barfuss und in légèrer Kleidung setzen darf. Wie Ferien in der Toscana mit jenen, die man seine Liebsten nennt. Die Platte ist ein Refugium für Sehnsüchte, ein intimes Hörerlebnis, ein Schatz. Es ist der Soundtrack fürs erste Mal und für alles was man doch schon kennt, aber immer wieder gerne erlebt. Disco Doom ist wie ein Gefühl. Nennen wir es mal Liebe. |

Das turiner Trio Disco Drive übrzeugte schon mit dem Album „what’s wrong with you people“, auf dem sie mit so unglaublicher Frische, Energie und einer guten Portion Noise durch die Dance Punk Disco fegten, dass sämtliche Genre-Größen dagegen verdammt alt aussahen. Mit der nun vorliegenden nachfolge-EP „Very“ gehen die Italiener einen Schritt weiter und zeigen sich noch innovativer, experimentierfreudiger und abgedrehter, ohne allerdings an Eingängigkeit zu verlieren. Da wird Geschrei zum Instrument, zerhackte Störgeräusche zur musikalisch Noise-Attake. Dazu gibt es wieder die astrein reduzierten und tighten Songs, die alles umblasen und sofort ins Ohr und in die Beine gehen. Wer live erleben durfte, wie die drei jungen Musiker auf der Bühne zwischen den Instrumenten hin- und herspringen, teilweise mit zwei Drums, Bass und ihren Stimmen ein absolutes Feuerwerk abfackeln, der bekommt eine Vorstellung von der Energie und dem Potential die in dieser Band stecken. Zwischen Gang Of Four und Sonic Youth und Q And Not U, doch neu und eigenständig. „Very“ ist mit seinen sechs Songs sicher nur ein kurzer Vorgeschmack auf das kommende Album, das nach dem was man hier zu hören bekommt ein absoluter Knaller zu werden verspricht. Wahnsinn. |

Sie haben im ART STORE auf St. Pauli, wo sie mit ein paar Freunden auch ihre grandiose CHEAP ART GALLERIE betreiben, ihre erste Solo LP aufgenommen. Als die Idee einer DM BOB & HIS ONE MAN BAND LP aufkam, kam SILKY und meinte: Hey, wenn BARBECUE BOB eine Solo LP macht, sollte ich da nicht auch eine machen? Und was konnten wir sagen? Wiederveröffentlichung dieser legendären Doom-Scheibe als Doppel-LP im Klappcover mit neuem Artwork! Als das ursprüngliche Doom-Label Peaceville Records Mitte der Neunziger an den Branchenriesen Music for nations verkauft wurde und die Rechte der ersten Doom-Platten damit in die Hände eines Major-Labels fielen, entschloss sich die Band das komplette frühe Material noch einmal neu einzuspielen und unter dem Titel ''Fuck Peaceville'' wieder zu veröffentlichen. Die Scheibe erschien auf Profane Existence, verkaufte sich fast 10.000mal und ist bereits seit Jahren ausverkauft und sehr gesucht. Originalmitglied Bri Talbot hat nun die kompletten 37 Songs neu gemastert und ''Fuck Peaceville'' erscheint als Re-Release auf Twisted Chords. Zusätzlich wurde das komplette Artwork überarbeitet und sieht nun erheblich besser aus als auf dem lieblosen Original. Doom gründeten sich 1987 und waren in ihrer ersten Phase bis 1990 unterwegs. In dieser Zeit entstanden unter anderem die ''War crimes''-LP, die ''Bury the debt - not the dead'' Split-LP mit No Security und die ''Total Doom''-CD, zusätzlich erschien die legendäre ''Police Bastard''-7'', die bis heute als die meistverkaufte Crust-Single der Welt gilt. Die Band war gerade mit der ''War Crimes''-LP von 1988 soundtechnisch sehr unzufrieden und so bot sich mit ''Fuck Peaceville'' die Gelegenheit, nicht nur dem ungeliebten ex-Label eins auszuwischen, sondern auch die alten Songs in wesentlich besserem Sound neu einzuspielen. ''Fuck Peaceville'' beinhaltet 37 Knaller-Songs in 64 Minuten, darunter das augenzwinkernde ''Bastard File In The Urethra Of Paul Halmshaw'' und natürlich auch Hits wie ''Police Bastard'' und ''Slave to convention''. Wütender, schneller und direkter Crust-Punk, der zusammen mit Discharge Maßstäbe setze und für die allermeisten Bands dieses Genres Inspiration war und ist. Kurze, knappe Texte, die auf den Punkt kommen und rausbrüllen, was gesagt werden muss. Nach der Auflösung der Band waren Doom-Mitglieder unter anderem bei Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death, Dirt, Sore Throat und Police Bastard aktiv. Von 1992 bis 2001 waren Doom in wechselnden Besetzungen abermals aktiv und veröffentlichten unter anderem mehrere Singles und Platten, ehe sie 2005 noch einmal zu einer UK-Tour zusammen kamen. Seitdem ist die Band endgültig Geschichte und mit ''Fuck Peaceville'' ist nun auch der wichtigste Teil ihrer Diskographie wieder erhältlich. Die Doppel-LP erscheint im Klappcover mit Posterbeilage und Downloadcoupon! |

Wie schon zu dem Vorgänger, sage ich, dass die frühen TORTOISE die wichtigste Referenz sind, mit ''früh'' meine ich die Zeiten von ''Millions Now Living ...'' und ''TNT''. Das Schlagzeug beispielsweise ist eine ''Ohrenweide'' für jeden, der gute Instrumentalisten zu schätzen weiß. Durch seine filigrane Arbeit webt es einen flauschigen Teppich und macht schon ohne die anderen Instrumente schöne Musik, wobei die anderen Musiker dem in nichts nachstehen und ihre faszinierenden Zierfäden ins Klanggeflecht einarbeiten. Faszinierend deshalb, weil jeder Part für sich recht merkwürdig klingt und erst im Zusammenspiel richtig Sinn ergibt. Genau wie die unterstellten Vorbilder namens TORTOISE gaben sich TDR nicht mit dem Erreichten zufrieden, sondern haben ihre Songs im Vergleich zu ''Meetings With Remarkable Machines'' auf ein höheres Qualitätsniveau gebracht. Ich habe den Eindruck, ''II'' ist etwas weniger ernsthaft, was nicht als Vorwurf verstanden werden soll. Es zeigt sich etwa in der Fülle an Klangspielereien und den vielen verschiedenen Instrumenten, die zum Einsatz gekommen sind. Eins ist aber gleich geblieben: Das hier ist höfliche Musik, die an einem vorbeirauschen kann, aber wenn man wirklich zuhört, dann nimmt sie einen gefangen. Wie gesagt: Schade, dass es die Band nicht mehr gibt. |

"Sorry", the new album, officially declares that the transition from Electronica to Songwriting is over. Dub Tractor is a fully blown one-piece indie band. The new album unfolds into a collection of pure pop. With proper tracks rather than instrumental tracks, this is the Dub Tractor fans have eagerly been waiting for. With clear references to the shoegazing movemenst of the 90s, Anders Remmer merges this heritage with his very own blend of dub-fuelled sound design and prototype electronica.
Delicate beats are the foundation for his deep, melancholic, yet uplifting songs. The opening track "And You Are Back" is not only a proper hit, it also shows perfectly what this album is all about. Feel free to whistle along, hum the melody as long as you want, learn the lyrics by heart: these tracks takes you under its wings. Once comfortable, the album is a full rollercoaster ride of catchiness. Shifting between sparse arrangements nodding in the direction of late works from bands like
Slowdive to full-on walls of guitars in proper My Bloody Valentine style: "Sorry" is a musical tour de force.
Anders Remmer has been making music for such a long time that it is quite hard to keep track of everything he's done. Born and raised in Denmark, Anders used to play in the danish supergroups "System 3". Together with Thomas Knak (aka Opiate) and Jesper Skaaning (aka Acustic) he has recorded 3 albums and 2 singles under this moniker, before the updated version of this project "System" hit a wall. Under his Dub Tractor guise, he has also recorded 3 albums and various singles, before he joined
the City Centre Offices roster in 2001, contributing tracks to a split-12" with Opiate. His first album for CCO "More Or Less Mono" was released in 2003, receiving critical acclaim all over the world. |
