Die Stimme bellt wie ein räudiger Köter, die Gitarren knarzen, krachen und krakelen um die Gunst des Hörers - die Texte sind komplett auf finnisch gehalten, was anfänglich etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig erscheint, sich mit der Zeit und etwas Gewöhnung aber nahtlos ins Gesamtbild einfügt - ich muss gestehen, die Jungs haben alles richtig gemacht, klasse Scheibe. |

Argentinian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alejandro Franov is one of the key figures of the alternative folk and world music scene of his country, brought to worldwide critical acclaim by singer/sonwriter and actress Juana Molina. Franov collaborated with Juana Molina on three of her albums, "Segundo" (2000), "Tres Cosas" (2002) and "Son" (2006). With "Khali" Staubgold is proud to present his first worldwide release, after five solo albums which have only been released in South America and Japan.
"Khali" which is mainly based on three instruments - the African mbira, the Paraguayan harp arpa and the Indian sitar - is the result of Franov's studies in African and Arabic music, especially the music of the Shona from Zimwbabwe. He carefully combines these unique instruments with percussion, voices and minimal electronics in order to create a comfortably floating stream of world music in the purest sense, hardly relating to any certain country or region.
On the one hand "Khali" is the name of the Croatian island where Franov's grandfather was born, on the other hand it's taken from the tabla rhythm cycle of Hindustani music, and it's the name of a Hindu goddess.
Born in 1972, today Alejandro Franov is one of the most important musicians in Argentina. His unique musical talent has attracted many artists and led to collaborations with Juana Molina, Liliana Herrero,
Fernando Kabusacki, Mono Fontana, Santiago Vasquez, Seiichi Yamamoto (Rovo, ex-Boredoms), Yuji Katsui (Rovo), Kama Aina and many more. |

Alela Diane wuchs als Tochter zweier Musiker in der ehemaligen Goldgräberstadt Nevada City in Nordkalifornien auf, genau wie ihre musikalische Seelenverwandte Joanna Newsom mit der sie seit Jahren befreundet ist. Ihre Musik ist sehr reduziert und wird im Wesentlichen von ihrer warmen, kraftvollen und exotischen Stimme sowie ihrem melancholischen Gitarrenspiel bestimmt. Ihr ungewöhnlicher, seelenvoller Sound ist am besten als Gospel Folk mit einem guten Schuss Blues zu beschreiben, in ihren meditativen Lyrics beschäftigt sich die junge Künstlerin verstärkt mit den Themen Natur, Familie und Selbstfindung. Ihr Debütalbum \"The Pirate\'s Gospel\", das Alela auf einem Europatrip schrieb und dann im Studio ihres Vaters in Nevada City aufnahm, wurde in Amerika bereits 2006 veröffentlicht. Fargo Records wurden auf die außergewöhnliche Künstlerin im Zuge der Label-Compilation \"Even Cowgirls Get The Blues\" aufmerksam. \"The Pirate\'s Gospel\" wurde von den englischen Rough Trade Shops zur besten Platte des Jahres 2007 gewählt.
Mit ihrem 2. Album \"To Be Still\" begibt sich Alela Diane nun auf Welteroberungskurs, in Nord-Amerika bekam sie sofort einen Lizenzdeal bei Rough Trade Records, in Europa kommt das französische Fargo Label erneut zum Zuge und veröffentlicht dieses grandiose Album, das im Vergleich zum Vorgänger mit weitaus mehr Instrumentierungen auffährt und produktionstechnisch ein neues Level erreicht. Alela Diane wuchs als Tochter zweier Musiker in der ehemaligen Goldgräberstadt Nevada City in Nordkalifornien auf, genau wie ihre musikalische Seelenverwandte Joanna Newsom mit der sie seit Jahren befreundet ist. Ihre Musik ist sehr reduziert und wird im Wesentlichen von ihrer warmen, kraftvollen und exotischen Stimme sowie ihrem melancholischen Gitarrenspiel bestimmt. Ihr ungewöhnlicher, seelenvoller Sound ist am besten als Gospel Folk mit einem guten Schuss Blues zu beschreiben, in ihren meditativen Lyrics beschäftigt sich die junge Künstlerin verstärkt mit den Themen Natur, Familie und Selbstfindung. Ihr Debütalbum \"The Pirate\'s Gospel\", das Alela auf einem Europatrip schrieb und dann im Studio ihres Vaters in Nevada City aufnahm, wurde in Amerika bereits 2006 veröffentlicht. Not afraid to bring the beat, Under heads back to the floor for ‘Distantes’, which kicks it into gear from the start, working a minimal approach into maximized power. 'Collage' is the mixed beauty of a tough techno record complemented with elements of minimal purity – very good indeed. |

This debut five track EP is a bicostal collaboration between the production/beat-making of anticon's Alias and the voice and inspiration of Rosa Tarsier Rapadas of New York's cinematronic duo, Healamonster & Tarsier. The EP is a lush blend of pop melodies, hushed vocals and classic anticon boom-bap beats reminiscent of Broadcast, Postal Service, Styrofoam and Lali Puna. Dr. C drops us directly into their bittersweet fantasy world, opening with a crunchy swell of noise breaking off and crackling with static before a pregnant pause and release. An upbeat acoustic guitar (courtesy of Anticon's own Telephone Jim Jesus) makes way for Tarsier's vocal and Alias' display ofwhirring keyboards, rickety clicks and pops, scruffy bass beats and ratcheted percussion. Instrumentals for both tracks feature, plus an exclusive remix of Dr. C. by Healamonster, Tarsier's usual collaborator. |

Verquast? Aber nicht doch! Alles nicht so schlimm, meine Damen und Herren, wenn man denn verspielte und gelegentlich leicht überambitionierte Vehemenz ebenso auszuhalten bereit ist, wie qualitative Gegensätze. Denn die hier zelebrierte Melange aus Destrukto-Disco und Diskurs-Chanson ballert mit Ironie und ausgeklügelten Arrangements ganz herrlich furios um sich, während die zum Teil sehr schlauen und lesenswerten Texte sich leider auch gerne mal im bedeutungsschwangerem Schwadronieren verlieren. Ein Album voller Brüche somit, von dem ich mir vorstellen kann, dass es nicht wenigen Anhängern gewöhnlicherer Klänge innerhalb kürzester Zeit mächtig auf den Zeiger geht. Ein Album aber auch, das bei aller Reibungsfläche und durchaus vorhandenem Nerv-Potenzial das Portrait einer frischen, vor kreativer Energie schier berstenden Band zeichnet. Sollte man als Zielgruppe obig beschriebenen Anti-Pop-Entwurfs zumindest mal gehört haben, auch wenn es durchaus wehtun kann. |

Auf den elf Songs (zwölf mit Intro) präsentiert Annie ein Pop-Panoptikum, das R’n’B’- (Always Too Late) wie Retro-Disco- (Come Together) oder Elektro-Einflüsse einschliesst (Happy Without You) und dennoch nach einem stimmigen Ganzen klingt. Dass The Greatest Hit auch drauf ist und sich sehr gut einfügt in die neuen Songs, zeugt davon, dass Annie genau weiss, wie ihr Sound klingen soll und eine Richtung verfolgt. Der Nachfolger zu The Greatest Hit könnte Chewing Gum werden, die erste Single-Auskopplung, ein Elektro-Synthie-Song mit einem edgy Stop-and-Go-Beat, in dem Männer mit Kaugummmis gleichgesetzt werden (“Hey Annie, well, look at you! Is that a new boy stuck on your shoe?”). Me Plus One bringt wohl Annies Sound am besten auf den Punkt: Glitzernde Melodien, unterlegt mit elektronischen Spielereien und einem doch unerwarteten Beat, bei dem es (wohl dosiert) wummert und peitscht und piept. My Heartbeat lässt einen nach gewissen anfänglichen Akzeptanzschwierigkeiten von so viel Harmonie in einem Song nicht mehr los. Annie singt honigsüss vom Tanzen und Ausgehen über eine Melodie wie aus rosa Watte, der Beat stämpfelt ganz dezent voran. Sicherlich der Ohrwurm dieser Platte.

This is not hooligan music: it pokes at the tender underbelly of emotion and emerges teary-eyed and broken. Swirling mists of piano and synth are layered beneath ethereal vocals drenched in longing.
That said, the album is also true to its name. For all the near-sobbing, this is a well-written bunch of songs, and will certainly appeal to fans of the Garden State soundtrack, or any of the bands it apes. The same sort of melody structure is in evidence throughout, as nearly all of the songs warble by in subdued tone before building to an emotionally-charged chorus.
The title song, "Strange and Beautiful" was featured on the Wicker Park soundtrack, a great collection for lovers of this brand of pop. It is the catchiest tune on the album save "Brighter Than Sunshine," which is so similar to Coldplay, it's eerie.

What can you say about Armitage Shanks a band named after a fine bit of porcelain..... well quite a lot actually...... Formed in Snodland, Kent in early 1991, good mates of Billy Childish they released their first single ''Do You Want Some Fuckin' Shirts Off Or What'' (with Billy Childish on Vocals) in early 1993, they became the support band at ''Thee Headcoats'' London shows at the now legendary Wild Western Room in Archway (mainly because Dick drove Thee Headcoats van). They recorded and mixed their debut album ''Takin' The Piss'' in three and a half hours at Toe Rag Studios (still a record I believe), Mr Childish twiddled the knobs while they drunk excessively. A fantastic album, still one of the best albums ever on Damaged Goods Records (so says Ian Damaged). From there on there was no stopping them, playing to over 20 people sometimes at their own shows in London, they then headed out on their first (and only) UK tour, drinking their way around the country followed by a full European tour the year after. They did a punk covers album for Vinyl Japan in which they annihilated 20 punk classics and then released lots of singles on labels in Germany (that's us at Little Teddy), France, Japan and America. Another album ''Shanks Pony'' followed in 1995, another stormer and a live album called ''Cacophony Now'' was released in mid 1997 which was recorded at the Hope'N'Anchor in October 1996. They then took an enforced break for 5 or so years... ...and the good news is that now the Shanks are back and they have also just finished a brand new album of new material, their first for 7 years which as ever was recorded in the now famous Toe Rag Studios in East London. It's called... wait for it... ''Urinal Heap'' and I reckon it's their best yet so we just had to have a chat with Ian at Damaged Goods to go for a vinyl edition. |

Der als „Trommler von Tocotronic“ bekannt gewordene Hamburger Künstler Arne Zank hat sich viel Zeit genommen für sein erstes, jetzt endlich auf dem bandeigenen Label Rock-O-Tronic erscheinendes Solo-Album.
Composed und aufgenommen wurden die 6 Tracks bei ihm zu Hause auf dem Laptop, mit bescheidenem Old-School-Equipment, einigen Lieblingsgeräten zwischen Keyboards, Gitarren und Rumbanüssen. Mit ein wenig Hilfe von Freunden wie Turner, DJ Phono und Thomas Maringer wurde der Klang optimiert und auf den Punkt gebracht.
Zank beteiligt sich nicht am eitlen Rattenrennen hochgezüchteter Hi-Techproduktionen, sondern sucht den unmittelbaren Ausdruck des Singer-Songwriters - ohne dessen konventionelle Strukturen zu übernehmen. Das ist dann vielleicht die DJ Shirley in ihm, eines seiner Pseudonyme, die sich Musik einfach nicht einsam vorstellen kann, sondern immer in einer sozialen Situationen auf einem zumindest imaginablen Dancefloor. Er gönnt sich lange, irre führende Intros, bis schließlich doch die gerade Bassdrum einfährt – nichts und niemand niederknüppelnd, sondern alle schlicht ergreifend erlösend. |

Soul Jazz Records are re-releasing their seminal retrospective on Arthur Russell. - Since the initial groundbreaking release of ‘The World of Arthur Russell’ five years ago, Russell has become the subject of intense media interest. With the recent release of a film about his life (‘A Portrait of Arthur Russell’), as well as a new album of unreleased recordings, (‘Love Is Overtaking Me’), Arthur Russell’s stature as a great artist has grown to is current height. (\\\"One of the great songwriters of the 2oth Century\\\" The Wire). - Arthur Russell holds a unique place in the history of dance music. As an artist he had the admiration of everyone from Philip Glass to Todd Terry. As well as his solo work he also formed the seminal groups Dinosaur L and Loose Joints in the 1980s. With tracks such as \\\"Go Bang\\\" and \\\"Is It All Over My Face?\\\", Russell redefined Dance music in the 1980s as both an intelligent and subversive form. At the centre of the New York Dance scene in the 1980s, Russell was co-founder of Sleeping Bag Records along with Will Socolov. As well as releasing Russell’s own material, Sleeping Bag would release seminal music from Mantronix, Larry Levan, Patrick Adams, EPMD, Joyce Sims and Todd Terry amongst others. As a regular visitor at David Mancuso’s \\\" Loft\\\", and Nicky Siano’s \\\"Gallery\\\" nightclubs and even Studio 54, Russell immersed himself in the New York Dance scene whilst continuing to create avant-garde experimental music. These two elements in his life and music make him truly unique. Larry Levan, Walter Gibbons and Francois Kervorkian all played pivotal roles as remixers of Russell’s work and feature on many of the tracks featured here. - Arthur Russell died in 1992 from AIDS leaving behind an enormous body of work. This release features both the classic tracks of Arthur Russell such as \\\"Go Bang\\\", \\\"Is It All Over My Face\\\", \\\"Wax The Van\\\" etc alongside impossible-to-find collectors tracks such as \\\" In The Light Of The Miracle\\\" and the private-pressing only \\\"Pop Your Funk\\\". Was founded in 1996 and released a bizarre CD for Mellow Records their music has been defined an original blending of psycho-raga-blues and if compared to their mainly acoustic debut (''The original Astral Weeks' sound''), has become more and more electric over the years. Two ex Effervescent Elephants (Lodovico Ellena & aldo Casciano) aremembers of the group, a well-know italian psychedelic band the othes are veteran bass-player Mauro Coda and young guitarist Max Mussetti. The band's philosophy is to privilege the hot, crude sounds of the garage-studio, to the cleaner sounds of the <>recording studio. 180 gr. virgin vinyl presing, heavy quality sleeves. |

Verdammt hab ich das vermisst. Atom auf den Pfaden des digital verhakten Wahnsinns. Funky, versponnen, überdreht und immer wieder fast auseinanderfallend aber dabei doch so perfekt, dass man glaubt das Mothership gehört ihm. Brilliant vom ersten bis zum 7 Track und perfekt für jede Party auf der Funk und Alien-Style irgendwie zusammen gehören. Und dabei kann er sogar zwischendurch noch auf Deutsch singen und so tun als wäre es Easy Listening, das alles spielt keine Rolle, denn es kommt aus einer Welt in der Musik so in Kleinteile zersplittert ist, dass der Groove irgendwo in den Brüchen entsteht, egal ob er einen Smoking aus silbernem Glitzer anhat. |

Audience is one of the most interesting groups in the British panorama of the late 60s early 70s. Their sound was a manifestation of their desire to experiment with and masterfully blend different musical styles, such as rock, folk, jazz, and blues. If we must make comparisons, Tull immediately leap to mind, for the band’s use of flute. Audience gained moderate notoriety thanks to their constant gigging, and they soon released this 1969 self-titled debut, which featured an excellent use of (predominantly acoustic) guitar (Howard Werth) and equally high-quality flute, sax and clarinet playing (Keith Gemmell), not to mention the distinctive voice of Werth, and their simple, but effective arrangements (a period when prog rock reigned supreme). \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Maiden’s Cry,\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' brings to mind \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Stairway To Heaven\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\', but it was actually written two years before the Zeppelin-penned opus. Der mit sexy Retro-Orgel-Sound durchsetzter Stilmix aus Punk, Garage, New Wave und 70ies Rock kommt ähnlich locker aus der Hose wie wir das von den frühen Robos oder meinetwegen auch Tokyo Sex Destruction kannten und ist doch ganz anders. MC5, The Who, Syd Barret, ja sogar Led Zeppelin haben hier nämlich ebenso ihre Spuren hinterlassen und man merkt The Audience an, dass sie ihre Hausaufgaben gemacht haben. So klingt „Celluloid“ eben nicht nur retro sondern auch erstaunlich zeitgemäß. In jedem Fall aber zwingend und völlig überzeugend. |

It is also the fourth in a series of records in which Roberts, having begun in more abstract territory in New Zealand's mid-1990s 'free noise' ferment, has embraced song, lyric and voice as vessels for topographic and psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on the subject.
This is reflected by the shape-shifting nature of the outfit: while Autistic Daughters, whose name comes from a lyric from their first record "Jealousy And Diamond" (staubgold 56 lp), are resolutely a trio, they also work in cinematic format, with ancillary players – in this instance, Chris Abrahams of The Necks, Martin Siewert and Valerio Tricoli – as part of both cast and crew, foley artists behind the trio's complex, worm-turning arrangements.
With "Uneasy Flowers", Roberts traces the internal and external workings of one protagonist: or, rather, a protagonist who 'contains multitudes', a figure that dissolves the unified self. Rather, this character, Rehana, embodies multiplicity and fragmentation in order to both a) address loss and b) aim toward transfiguration, transcendence. There are traces in the lyrics – traces of addiction and desire, myth and transformation - that are obliquely reflected in the music’s structure, its uneasy tension between the pop song (the 'moment') and experiment (the 'process').
In some ways, it reminds of the structural, loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-scene, the hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of your own control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The move from intimacy to capture of the 'greater picture' enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out, a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities.

In some ways, it reminds of the structural, loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-scene, the hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of your own control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The move from intimacy to capture of the 'greater picture' enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out, a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities.

Ehemalige MUM & Animal Collective Mitglieder mit neuen Ideen!
Avey and Kria recorded their debut collaboration “Pullhair Rubeye” with guitars and piano on an eight track in their practice space in Brooklyn. Then they traveled to upstate New York where the record was mixed down onto a two track borrowed from a friend who bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Just as the two were completing the mix, the two track broke down and Avey and Kria didn\'t hear the mixes until two months later when they obtained another two track. After this short vacation, they were surprised by the sounds they had made.
