	What the label says about The Yorkshire Rambler EP, by Serious Sam Barrett: Serious Sam Barrett is a solo acoustic artist drawing on a vast range of traditional idioms to create his own unique sound. His songwriting contains echoes of the great blues masters such as Bukka White and Blind Willie Mctell but also of American folk artists such as the Carter Family. Raised in the English folk tradition, Sam also draws heavily on English, Irish and Scottish folk music and arranges his own unique versions of traditional songs taking influence from such luminaries as Ewan Mcoll, Tim Hart and the Watersons. Sam is known for his direct, uncompromising heartfelt live performances and has pursued a remarkably busy gig schedule since embarking on a solo career in 2005. Sam is as comfortable playing in folk clubs as he is in font of rock and punk audiences and his fan base is composed of music lovers from the folk, blues, country and punk scenes. Sam has developed a strong following across England and beyond, having recently toured Califonia playing in pubs, clubs and cafes across the state. Benjy Ferree ist ein moderner Robin Hood, der die Inspirationen für seine schräg taumelnden Folk-Rock-Songs aus der Filmwelt entnimmt und diese den unterdrückten Abhängigen des Formatsounds auf diese Weise wiedergibt. Zu dieser These reizt natürlich das Cover, das den Mann aus Maryland, der seine prägenden Jahre als Au Pair u.a. für David Lynch in Hollywood verbrachte, sich musikalisch aber eher der Westküste und dem Süden verbunden fühlt, als grünbekappten Outlaw zeigt. Irgendwo passt das aber, denn Ferree mixt munter verschiedenste Zutaten in seine Songs, die er dann - mit Streichern, Bläsern und je einer Prise Country und Led Zep-Rock angereichert - unters Volk bringt. Als Filmfan und gescheiterter Filmstar tut Ferree das auf eine bemerkenswert anschauliche, greifbare Weise. Das Ferrees technische Fähigkeiten dabei überschaubar bleiben, hat Ferrees Kumpel Produzent Brendan Canty (Fugazi) als altes Indie-Schlitzohr in der üblichen Weise als Pluspunkt zu nutzen gewusst, indem er sich gar nicht erst bemühte, Ordnung ins Geschehen zu bringen, was zu einer sympathischen, torkelnden Schrammelorgie führte. In ihrer gemeinsamen Zeit bei PET stellten sie ihre Liebe zur flüssigen Seite des Rock'n'Roll fest und BIG SIR wurde aus der Taufe gehoben. Auf "Und Die Scheiße Ändert Sich Immer" gibt es wieder eine schräge Mischung aus Pop und Jazz Grooves mit freundlicher Unterstützung von Money Mark (BEASTIE BOYS), dem Multiinstrumentalisten Adrian Terrazas Gonzales (THE MARS VOLTA), Jonathan Hischke (HELLA) am Bass und vereinzelter Produktion von Mickey P. (PEACHES, BECK).

Originally composed by legendary Roky Erickson YOU DON\'T LOVE ME YET starts slow around a synth drone and a fragile violin, builds up slowly with more acoustic and electric instruments and voices to finally end in a massive endless pop hymn with roaring orchestra arrangements and blue eyed gospel choir. YOU DON\'T LOVE ME YET is a 9 minute anthem recorded by friends and musicians from Stockholm at Atlantis Studio (ABBA recorded here in the 70\'s says the history book). Johanna had the idea for this piece, when she heard on public radio that Sweden has the highest number of single households worldwide. YOU DON\'T LOVE ME YET toured as a \'coversong festival\' throughout Sweden and Norway and became a phenomenon in it\'s own right. Imagine your local music scene shows up and performs nothing but YOU DON\'T LOVE ME YET. Besides those held in Scandinavia YOU DON\'T LOVE ME YET happenings took place in San Francisco, Chicago, London and around the Netherlands. MAGICAL WORLD documents a group of children from Zagreb, Croatia performing this pop masterpiece, originally written for the Chicago vocal group \"The Rotary Connection\" in the summer of love. This very mixed vocal pop ensemble with the outstanding voice of Minnie Ripperton in lead is in Billings version replaced by a group of very concentrated and very earnest kids, singing: \"Why do you wake me up / From such a beautiful dream / Can\'t you see that I am sleeping / So why / don\'t you leave me alone /... / I live in a magical world.\"

Wenn Nadja Rüdebusch unter dem Namen Binoculers eines ihrer zahlreichen Konzerte spielt, werden manche von der Leichtigkeit beeindruckt sein, mit der sich Töne und perkussive Sounds als live erstellte Loops zu Songs verdichten. Mithilfe von unter anderem Gitarre, Gesang, Keyboards und Glockenspiel entstehen so Lieder, die andere aufgrund ihrer Klangfarben schätzen. Wie bei der Betrachtung eines Sommerhimmels durch die schwankende Krone eines Baumes wechseln hier lichte und schattige Momente ab, während sich die Melodien gleich dem Glitzern auf der Oberfläche eines Flusses bewegen. Oder aber Hörer achten zuerst auf Stimme und Worte, durch die “nah” und “fern” zu Empfindungen werden, Sehnsucht etwas mit Seefahrern und Raumschiffen zu tun hat und Einsamkeit keine Drohung, sondern Erfahrung ist. Nadja Rüdebusch singt auf den genau verdichtet und konzentriert von Ängsten und Schönheit, sie tut es in Bildern, die ebenso behutsam wie die Musik entworfen werden. Neben den verwendeten Instrumenten rückt vor allem diese Bildhaftigkeit Binoculers in die Nähe des Folk, dessen Tradition sie durch behutsame Erneuerung respektiert. Der Rolling Stone nennt sie in seiner Besprechung des Debütalbums “Every Seaman’s Got A Favourite Spaceship” (Labelship, 2010) eine “erstaunliche Künstlerin” und lobt “(…)(sie) verzaubert die Menschen. Mit leisem Indie-Folk, Popmusikminiaturen, Spieluhrmelodien und viel künstlerischer Fantasie.” Im November 2012 erscheint das zweite Album “There Is Not Enough Space In The Dark”. There are certainly plenty of them out there to be found-- most music fails to get even decent distribution, things are marooned in home countries with tiny populations, and sometimes records are just overlooked or misunderstood in their day. If you were to stumble across them in a dusty old crate, it would be tempting to trumpet Bobb Trimble\\\'s two albums as lost masterpieces, and to a certain kind of music fan they are, but to most people they will play more as interesting, occasionally superb curiosities. Trimble hailed from Marborough, Mass., and was part of nearby Worcester\\\'s late-1970s/early-80s \\\"Wormtown\\\" scene, which comprised mostly punk bands who played very different music from what he was trying to do. Loosely, Trimble falls in the psychedelic loner category of American fringe music, alongside guys like Rick Saucedo, D.R. Hooker, and Faine Jade. The real gems from the debut album are the fuzzed-out psych march \\\"When the Raven Calls\\\", and \\\"One Mile From Heaven\\\", a gentle, mostly acoustic song with a beautiful chorus that showcases his falsetto at its best. Trimble\\\'s second album, 1982\\\'s aptly named Harvest of Dreams, uses many of the same musical elements as the first, but the songs are a bit stronger and his grasp of atmosphere had developed considerably. That didn\\\'t stop him from including \\\"Oh Baby\\\", a bizarre track featuring Trimble and the Kidds, a band of pre-adolescent children he briefly fronted. 	SEALED LImITED & NUMBERED Since their inception, Chicago's Bound Stems have shown that they have the ability to write great guitar pop, but they've always wanted to do more, to add layers of complexity and tension to their catchy songs. The band's first full-length, Appreciation Night, mined a lot of charm from the clutter, though its few more linear songs stood taller than the rest. Follow-up The Family Afloat is more earnestly committed to making pop out of these tricky, occasionally incongruent parts. It's in the same carefully-cultivated messiness of their debut, but it seems to strike a better balance: The production shines, the transitions are more careful and the interludes more purposeful, the vocals are fuller and more confident, the hooks swing harder, and there's even a distinct theme. The opening track makes a trip to San Francisco sound better than Disney World, but the rest of the songs come to terms with putting down roots. That opener, "Taking Tips From the Gallery Gang", puts Bobby Gallivan's voice right up front, with ephemeral layers of guitar fading in and out underneath. It has a typically unpredictable arrangement, but with a newfound anchor. "Happens to Us All Otherwise," meanwhile, might be the group's catchiest and most direct pop song yet, bursting with jangling guitars and innocent, pleading vocals. "Passing Bell" and "Palace Flophouse and Grill" return to the lurching, unpredictable rhythms of their previous album and EP, but Gallivan and singer Janie Porche are far less tentative vocalists and can better carry the song. (Porche only gets a bewildering, borderline angsty solo spot on "Palace"; she steps up when needed on Family Afloat, but mostly avoids the spotlight.) In a catalogue where mood is as important as songwriting, the placid piano track "Clear Water & Concrete" has some of their prettiest and most compelling textures yet. (It's also a welcome shift to a more meditative tone, as the band hardly takes a breath to let their hooks land at this point.) "Cloak of Blue Sky" has the city imagery Bound Stems often trade in and more of the affable shuffle that seems to be their rhythmic comfort zone. "Winston" is an even better shift in tone, with acoustic strums, a few banjo plucks, and atmospheric keyboards that are beautiful, affecting, and put together with impossible care. Closing track "Sugar City Magic" begins with a staccato guitar line that's more in line with the pensive math-rock that the band toyed with in their earlier, pre-Flameshovel days, though it soon shifts perspectives by handing off the baton on vocals to get a more layered view on the family in the lyrics. For all their ambition, there are still moments on Family Afloat that feel forced-- more "Look what we can do!" instead of simply, "Look what we do well." Yet Bound Stems have the rarefied ability to make that mess sound gorgeous, as if all were in its right place even when it's held together by chewing gum in some spots.

Weil sie aber gleichzeitig auch noch ungemein ausgefeilt, verspielt, manchmal tatsächlich sogar eingängig und eigentlich immer schlicht schön sind, ist Chris Adams ein kleines Kunststück gelungen. 	NEW LTD Some artists rejoice in the belief that making hideously overblown statements of their so-called intentions is the way forward to success and prosperity. Others, however, would rather just keep the whole thing simple, almost to a minimal, if slightly nonchalant degree that some would call lazy rather than effortless if it weren't for the potency of the music contained within. Californian duo Brightblack Morning Light slip quite evidently into the latter category. While it would be easy to just dismiss them as stoners or hippies, particularly due to their locality and the history that goes with it, that would be doing their engagingly tranquil wares an almighty disservice. Sure, there are obvious throwbacks in what they do to a time when Timothy Leary was experimenting with microdots and Syd Barrett was the focal point in 'The' Pink Floyd and their amazing Technicolor light and sound show. The fact that Brightblack Morning Light are of a completely different era doesn't really alter the mindset. What they do have, however, is an intense political message which is conveyed throughout 'Motion In Light'; yes, you guessed it, their opposition to United States military presence in the Middle East isn't something they take lightly, and even though these songs glide with a wistful ambience last heard on the early Porcupine Tree records, make no mistake about the more-often-than-not whispered commentary that encapsulates such soothing rides as 'Oppressions Each'. The two main conspirators here, Nathan 'Naybob' Shineywater and Rachael Hughes both have a history of being keen environmentalist spokespeople when they're not making music, and the words to 'Hologram Buffalo', the album's opening spine-tingling voyage, reads like a list of man-made crusades against what nature intended. Likewise, 'A Rainbow Aims' is a moving, cataclysmic trip that recalls Spacemen 3 in their 'Perfect Prescription' days, settling into an almost comatose loop of gently strummed guitars with the emphasis purely on coming down. Elsewhere, 'Motion To Rejoin' crosses so many boundaries musically that it would be impossible to pinpoint any one generic area of expertise Brightblack Morning Light feel safe in. Which is probably the reason why this record is so captivating in many ways; at times one can almost imagine the record being made in one take without any prior rehearsals, such is the mellow atmosphere and air of de-stressed relaxation throughout. 'Past A Weatherbeaten Fencepost' perhaps sums up the whole vibe here, taking a similar path to the experimental leanings of psychedelic legends Love while never straying too far away from Shineywater and Hughes' obvious folk roots either, in the same way America's 'Horse With No Name' is still revered, albeit quietly, by anyone with a vague interest in such a genre. 'Motion To Rejoin' looks like breaking Brightblack Morning Light's seven-year itch - their first recordings emerged way back in 2001 to little or no attention - in that the fame their core members tend to shy away from may be unavoidable to steer clear from once the masses become aware of this opus. And trust me they will, sooner rather than later. 8/10 Dom Gourlay

	new 2008 DIGGI SEALED Es gibt nicht viele Alben, die einen Frohsinn ausstrahlen, dass man es immer und immer wieder hören möchte. Und vor allem, die auch noch ein so betörendes Cover haben, wie es bei Brisa Roché der Fall ist (auch auf Vinyl). Man möchte es einfach in seinem Plattenregal haben. "Takes" eben. Auch wenn einem zum Fotomotiv Begriffe wie "zierlich" und "süß" einfallen, so wird einem beim Hören der ersten Töne aber schnell klar: Hier ist eine wahre Expertin am Werk. Eine Expertin für schöne Melodien, für leichtes und doch intelligentes Songwriting. Kleine Diamanten sind es, die "Takes" zu dem machen, was es ist: ein Album für alle Lebenslagen. Zwischen aller Freude schwingt immer auch Melancholie und ein bisschen Schwermut mit ohne dabei depressiv zu wirken. Kunstvolle Musik sozusagen, mit wunderbaren Arrangements. Aber minimalistisch. Und wirft man ein Blick in das Kleingedruckte auf "Takes", Brisas zweitem Album, dann offenbart die amerikanische Künstlerin noch mehr Talente. Sie ist neben Songwriting und Arrangements auch verantwortlich für Instrumente wie Tamborine und der so genannten Ocarina, einer Art Flöte, die aussieht wie ein Raumschiff in Fischform. Stimmlich könnte man vermuten, Brisa Roché sei Französin. Aber auch musikalisch sind da Parallelen zu erkennen, wie beispielsweise zu Charlotte Gainsbourg, dabei, so Brisa, meinen die Franzosen, dass es "kalifornisch klänge. Ich vermute mal wegen dieser verträumten Art, die Harmonien übereinander zu schichten." Roché selbst beschreibt "Takes" als eine "Mischung aus drogeninfizierten New-York-Sound, Westcoast-Psych-Pop mit Folk-Einschlag und britischer Theatralik." Na dann: Hinein ins Hörvergnügen.

	Sealed After delivering one of Morr's most memorable 7" releases in recent memory (Getaway/Leave This Town), singer-songwriter Joel Nicholson has come up with a full-length for the Berlin label, compiling thirteen home recordings largely focussed on whispered vocal and softly plucked acoustic guitar. Former A-side 'Getaway' sets the album underway with a slightly more expansive palette than that, pairing lo-fi fuzztone guitar with simple percussion to evoke a writing style that's somewhere between Smashing Pumpkins and Elliott Smith. That latter name will pop into your head repeatedly over the course of listening to this album. For one thing, Nicholson's voice occupies a similarly hushed register to Smith's in his demo recordings, but beyond that, the melodic content of pieces like 'House / Home' could hardly be more explicitly informed by the late American writer. Nicholson is no one trick pony though: the harmonised voices and carefully fingerpicked guitars of 'Leave This Town' and 'You Know Everything' suggest a strong creative kinship with Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, while 'Bike' and 'Ball Point Skin Notes' are coloured by shades of Sufjan Stevens. It might seem a little tiresome to constantly cross-reference the work of a new singer-songwriter with that of various others operating within the same genre, but it's an almost inevitable part of being a new artist that such comparisons should be invited, and "Sleep At Your Own Speed" is strong enough to survive any familiarities it might carry with it - Nicholson's writing is personal and intimate enough to remain distinctive regardless of what other records come to mind while you're listening. There's a subtlety and honesty to this music that'll keep you returning to it for a good long while. Highly Recommended.
