Northern Songs In A Southern Style - ´Fab Guiro!´
Welcome to ´Fab Guiro!´ - the album title is a combination of both the popular british phrase ´Fab Gear´ referring to all cool music & lifestyle aspects and issues surrounding the band and also stresses the relation to the percussion instrument ´Guiro´ that is an integral instrument, sound and necessity in latin, salsa and especially traditional cuban music. ´Fab Guiro!´ is beat music in a fascinating, exotic robe, a drum roll of liverpudlian song pearls
The songs of the Beatles on ´Fab Guiro!´ do actually sound like copacabana, cuba and kingston - but always like the english harbour town in the summer - northern song in a southern style are indeed warm songs, ´Fab Guiro!´ simply means lots of fun, entertainment and thus celebrates our heroes
Where the Fab Four work with for example a guitar solo, you will hear a vibe solo on ´Fab Guiro!´ and the intense female soul of Majka Edyole, of course with a little spanish accent in her brilliant (english) voice. The spirited lead singer of The Sweet vandals is THE musical figurehead on this album. ´Fab Guiro!´ is a latin american beatles songbook, honors the band as ´mozart´s of pop´ and really tributes to their classic songs - simply because the coversongs treat the originals manifoldly and full of respect!
The interpretations of these beatles tunes do actually gain momentum by partly obsure modalities - so all twelve tunes turn out to be groovy, full of soul and stylish and accord these Lennon / McCartney classics and Harrison´s ´Taxman´ as new, timeless and post-modern vesture!

Corduroy have helped shaping Acid Jazz´s vision and face throughout the 90s and belonged to the label´s most succesful and groundbreaking acts. Now hosting ´Fab Guiro!´ as the overall artistic mastermind, Ben Addison - drummer, songwriter and lead singer of Corduroy whom have been playing their acclaimed comeback gigs in the Jazz Café - has put into effect a very outstanding project on the occasion of a very special jubilee:
This fall Unique Records celebrates the 20th label anniversary! We´d like to take advantage at this point and refer to the the book \"Unique Records - High Quality Recordings Since 1988\" edited by unique´s graphic designer Max Gadatsch and our inhouse photographer Andreas Schikot that will be in stores and on sale from september 25th onwards - published by the cologne based Buero 9 Verlag (ISBN 978-3-00-023209-1). That is amongst the many reasons why under the aegis of the producer and beatles fan from scratch Ben Addison an all-star-combo with many different unique records artists contributing have recorded this album of contemporary latin versions.
With A Little Help From... The Friends:
´Fab Guiro!´ has been made with the help and contribution by these fine musicians and bands: Lead-singer Mayka Edyole from The Sweet Vandals (Madrid), the vibes-player Alexander Maczewski & percussionist Kay Vester from the duesseldorf based jazz-outfit Lex Eazy & The Mambo Club - who have re-recorded classic songs from the Unique catalogue already for our 100th release as mambo versions. Further features include the horn section with Martin Garcia & Josue Ciclon Garcia which have played on the most recent albums of Glen Anthony Henry & The Sweet Vandals (Madrid), Corduroy guitar player Scott Addison (London) and duesseldorfs Matt Flores as co-producer and mixing engineer who produces state of the art electronic music for compost black label and combination to name just a few.
Salsa, Cha Cha, cuban styles or native brasilian influences - Ben From Corduroy do not leave any latin genres untouched and work themselves through the amazing colorful variety of that beautiful music throughout ´Fab Guiro!´: Hailing from ´Ob La Di, Ob La Da´ as a root down studio 1 Ska soundalike to George Harrison´s aerial latin hymn of ´Taxman´ to the emotional plot of ´Fab Guiro!´ and the stunning outcome of ´Help!´ - recorded with a Batucada group and just topped with vocals and choirs especially this song appears to have been solely written for this samba event! We are already looking forward to the forthcoming Ben From Corduroy live shows debuting in early 2009 - may ´Fab Guiro!´ be with you!

South Florida has produced some great female singers over the years from Betty Wright to Gloria Estefan. But have you ever heard of Betty Padgett? Despite a relatively successful local career the answer is probably not. You’re even less likely to have seen or heard her hard-to-come-by self-titled debut album. Released in 1975 it includes “Sugar Daddy”, a gem of a track that sounds like it could be a Quantic or Mr Scruff production of late. The album will receive a full-length re-issue later in the year, but fr now this 12” includes both the original vocal version and an extended “Sugar Daddy” dub, previously only available on a super-rare12”. This tune alone would normally set you back a few hundred bucks. And Bettys dynamite soul, over such a tasty percussive mid-tempo groove makes it worth every penny.
On the flip-side is an even rarer track by Arthur Foy. Despite coming out of New Orleans “Get Up And Dance” does not sound like your typical Meters, Eddie Bo, etc inspired funk. Instead think deep chocolate soul ala Uno Melodic, Roy Ayers, 80s Ladies, RAMP etc. Down and dirty, and boasting a dance-floor-winning- hook, “Get Up And Dance” is an amazing cosmic soul discovery that came our way via Cool Chris at the Groove Merchant in San Francisco. Copies of the original are rarer than hens teeth and the very few we know about have exchanged hands for $400+.

Auf "Und Die Scheiße Ändert Sich Immer" gibt es wieder eine schräge Mischung aus Pop und Jazz Grooves mit freundlicher Unterstützung von Money Mark (BEASTIE BOYS), dem Multiinstrumentalisten Adrian Terrazas Gonzales (THE MARS VOLTA), Jonathan Hischke (HELLA) am Bass und vereinzelter Produktion von Mickey P. (PEACHES, BECK). |

After a four-year break from the studio, L.A.'s finest practitioners of party funk & breaks, BREAKESTRA, return to the fray with a brand new studio album on Strut this September, 'DUSK 'TILL DAWN'.
The band's recordings have been rare to savour, numbering an early live cassette-only mixtape, a handful of singles and second mixtape release on Stones Throw and a debut studio album, 'Hit The Floor', on Ubiquity in late 2005.
For 2009, Breakestra return with their long-awaited sophomore set exploring all colours of the funk spectrum. Built around the vision of "Music Man" Miles and Mixmaster Wolf (as well as producing, Miles plays drums, bass, guitars, keys and percussion on the record), the trademark Breakestra touches remain intact: Wolf fronts tough breakbeat jams 'Dark Clouds Rain Soul' and Stones Throw single 'Low Down Stank', Miles himself brings his soulful vocals to 'Need A Little Love' and 'I Don't Wanna Wait' and amazing new female
vocalist Afrodyete recalls the heyday of JB's Funky People on the terrific 'Come On Over'. The album even journeys into psychedelic soul (on the fuzzy 'Show Me The Way') and stripped-back New Orleans organ stylings on instrumental cut, 'North-East To Nippon'.
'Dusk 'Till Dawn' is a tribute to Tackett's late DJ partner at Rootdown, DJ Dusk, whose life was tragically taken in a road accident in 2007. Dusk himself appears alongside Jurassic 5's Charlie 2na on the funky rap joint 'Posed To Be' and the album is a fitting tribute to a much-loved L.A. figure and integral member of a scene which has become globally respected.
Breakestra's 'Dusk 'Till Dawn' is released late August / early September on Strut. The release will be accompanied by world tour dates beginning in October. |
