kai althoff, better known for his internationally renowned work in fine arts and his band "workshop" (releases for labels like sonig, ladomat, l'age d'or, captain trip and finlayson) has released his second soloalbum under the pseudonym "fanal"." "the second fanal album is released, and as you might know, the man behind is kai althoff. it features some extraordinary, almost brutally nasty pieces about eviction and deportation as well as a song about the instructions of a sexually obsessed man. there are almost always vocals, and none of them are nice or pleasing. one of the songs now is so german, so don't fool about it now and listen, follow the example: "he is not stupid, the german." the music is guitar, bass, synthesizer, drum computer and vocals, as already mentioned. to me it seems to be rather a vehicle to emphasise the words. the rhythm is always faster, apart from the track "mit den hunden" (with the dogs). and finally fanal poses the question: what does it mean to have a mother? one's values are dismantled, taken apart and replaced by aggression... it's fanal again, heralding a fight by physical as well as mental means. for some this music is only distinguished by its nastiness, but they'll find that all they can hope for is an hour of gentle reckoning..." Out of the Berlin school of minimalism and stripped bare cold metal rhythm comes the new batch of tracks from Fenin.
Although he quotes his influences as The Disciples and Dub Syndicate, these tracks have far more in common with the abstract sounds that very early ON-U Sound produced, such as The Missing Brazilians album "War zone". They are also reminiscent of seminal Cabaret Voltaire industrial cut -ups, such as the cold soundscapes of "Slugging For Jesus" -- now made available once more after years of deletion on Soul Jazz compilation, "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" --, or early Muslim Gauze tracks.
All these comparisons are good pointers: If you are interested in the above artists, you'll probably find these Fenin tunes interesting.
Fenin is by all accounts a young artist, and on the evidence presented here he does show promise for the future. These are deceptively simple constructions, but on further listening, offer complex rhythm patterns to involve the mind -- At their best, these tracks aspire to the paradoxical complexity of Steve Reich's album "Drumming", in which basic percussion patterns build up into sophisticated structures.
The simple one-word titles express the bareness and austerity of the sound: simple yet evocative.
A possible objection could be that some of the compositions at points seem to self consciously take too much from the stripped down Basic Channel/Rhythm and Sound/Paul St Hilaire style. Over all though, Fenin has avoided all the more obvious clichés of his chosen genre -- recommended for those of you into cold and very urban minimalism. |

Flying Lotus is a free spirit, “I have this beautiful lemon tree in my backyard, and on a sunny day the light shines through. Little
things like that inspire me.” A Coltrane through and through, Flying Lotus is the great-nephew of Alice Coltrane and a cousin of
Ravi Coltrane. “My greatest influences are my family, I’m lucky to have been around so many accomplished musicians.” And most
importantly, Flying Lotus is a visionary, so get ready to meet your favorite new producer.
1983 is the first full-length album from Flying Lotus, originally released on Plug Research in 2006. The album was an introduction
for most to a sound that connected the fractured, funky soul of Dilla and Madlib to the more psychedelic downtempo of Daedelus,
Nobody and other kindred spirits. In the years since this release, the Southern California scene has coalesced, and Lotus has
continued his genre synthesis, working with UK dubstep producer Kode9, among others. This is bass music that gets tagged
‘experimental’ because it pushes boundaries, but felt live, there’s no doubting the direct, physical impact it has on an audience.
While the title 1983 may conjure images of parachute pants and asymmetrical ‘dos, the ‘83 Lotus envisions isn’t the typical retro
cheese covered by VH1 specials. This is Blade Runner, Bambaataa, the Bomb Squad, and Basquiat. This is the musical future
Prince was dreamin’ about. |

Lex records are owning things right now, what with bagging the incredible Dangerdoom collaboration, the upcoing Ghostface joint and Subtle's latest, it's good to see them leaving enough space for the ever-brilliant Andrew Broder and his Fog moniker. ‘Loss Leader’ keeps to Broder's delicate mix of skewed acoustic songs and clever production, though the A side malfunctions with a noisy jam that could sound just as easily at home on a Dead Machines record, very unusual. It’s the flipside that’s getting me hot and bothered though, a killer continuation of the album with ‘10th Avenue Freakout Pt. 2’ and a gorgeous electronic instrumental ‘Shdws/Scrns’. Very very good indeed and hopefully a sign that there's more material on the way. Ace.
