One of the most exciting aspects of reintroducing so much rare and incredible music to the world is being able to finally make available material that’s been in label-vault limbo since the day it was recorded, vital sounds locked away from the deserving ears of the legions of devoted music fans we at Sundazed count ourselves among. But when we’re able to present previously shelved material by one of the most visionary and influential artists of all time, in exceptional fidelity, with the look and feel of the packaging that the artist originally meant it to have? Well, then, that just takes everything to another level completely—a level that’s certainly been reached with the exclusive vinyl-only issue of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band’s mind-blowing lost 1967 sessions.
Recorded in part as the follow-up to Safe as Milk, Beefheart’s debut from earlier that year, the world-shattering material on It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper was rerecorded, truncated, and issued—without the Captain’s approval—as Strictly Personal in 1968. Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazed’s stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the album’s planned ’67 design (Deliberately not shown here. It’s a surprise!), inside are rare photos and fascinating, exhaustive liner notes by Magic Band drummer John “Drumbo” French.
So here, then, is Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band’s second album of gloriously disjointed avant-rock/blues and free-jazz skronk, presented just as nature—and the Captain—intended. Even after more than 40 years, this music is still hopelessly ahead of its time—or, as one-time Magic Band member Ry Cooder once described it, “right on time.”

Coconuts, as a name for a band, may evoke tropical sweetness and Jimmy Buffet\'s ball sac. But that ain\'t this. What this is is three men playing slow, simple, and sinister grooves, but locking into them shits like Houdini in a water-torture tank, and then beating them into the ground. The whole deal is ornamented with guitars that sound like broken glass being swallowed by porpoisesin a really good, melodic way. And but wait there are vocals too, which add a Spacemen 3-ish vibe (I bet the guys in this band will hate that I said that, but sorry lads, it\'s true and it\'s a good thing). Want me to make a TV analogy? OK, fine. Coconuts is what would be playing in the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks if ATP curated it. This record is dark and beautiful. Get it.

Continuum represents a multi-layered synonym for the collective ambition and vision of Dirk Serries (VidnaObmana, Fear Falls Burning) and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, Blackfield), motivated by their immense passion for a wide-range of musical styles. “Continuum 2” is the second release in a series of limited edition albums being issued by Soleilmoon Recordings. Each CD is presented in a beautiful oversized digipack with breathtaking design and artwork by Lasse Hoile.
“Continuum 1”, the first release, captured both artists’ love of desolate, minimal music, and featured three 20 minute pieces of richly melancholic textural music. It sold out within a few weeks of its release, and was subsequently pirated in the Czech Republic, a dubious honor never previously bestowed upon a Soleilmoon release.
Fast-forward two years, and Serries and Wilson are back with “Continuum 2”. The new album again has three long pieces, but breaks from its predecessor by enriching its electronic soundscapes with a variety of electric guitars. The album defies easy categorization as it willfully and relentlessly crosses boundaries and genres, breaking every rule it meets and tearing down fences–and expections–along the way. Is it ambient? Is it metal? It is neither, and yet, it is both. But it’s so much more. Think of a Sci-Fi horror film shot on the surface of an abandoned, ghost-ridden planet, or the soundtrack to a slow motion apocalypse in which all life is extinguished beneath rock, dust and convulsing earth.
Before launching their Continuum project both artists had already released music with Soleilmoon. Steven Wilson worked collaboratively with Bryn Jones of Muslimgauze in a series of remixes of each other’s work, the result of which was an album and an EP, both simply titled “Bass Communion v. Muslimgauze”, issued shortly after Jones died in 1999. The material was remastered and reissued on a single CD as “bcvsmgcd” in 2006. VidnaObmana likewise worked with other artists to produce music for Soleilmoon, first with Asmus Tietchens on “Motives for Recycling” in 1999 and more recently with Frans de Waard (Beequeen, Goem, Shifts) and Tietchens on “The Shifts Recyclings” in 2002. Both albums used material from previously released recordings as a source or starting point, hence the “Recycling” in the titles.

This 2LP set contains the same music as on the (standard) Black Ships Ate The Sky CD. The vinyl is therfore the same as the CD in every musical respect, though there are several major differences to the packaging and images, and a new painting which takes up all the inner centre spread of the album. The 2LP also has a 16 page colour booklet with photographs, credits and lyrics. Some of the photographs of band members are different to those on the CD booklet. The records themselves are heavyweight black vinyl, with full colour labels. Edition of 1000 copies.
The booklet contains an introductory note on the writing of the album by David, all the lyrics, details of those who created the album, colour photographs of all the Current 93 family on the album, website details for everyone, Hallucinatory Patripassianist colour illustrations and BlackShipText on each page, and the names of all those who supported the recording, and the release, of this album by subscribing to it in advance.
