	New Sealed Ltd 2000 Worldwide Fifteen years ago, Thrill Jockey Records was founded on the Lower East Side of New York City. In other words, it was 1992, so Thrill Jockey did as many new labels of those days did and released a number of 7” singles, with now-familiar names like Tortoise and Freakwater, and some now-less-familiar early Thrillers like Sugarshock and Gorilla. In the fifteen years since 1992, the 7” singles have been fewer and farther between, but with some definite gems from time to time. Brokeback made its debut with a fine delight of a single called Returns to the Orange Grove. The Lonesome Organist bended minds with his 7” and its pop-up deluxe cover, and The National Trust made it happen with a 7” tribute to The Raspberries. Now Thrill Jockey is looking back to that tradition for a way to celebrate fifteen years of making records for our favorite bands. Inspired by the delicious Devil’s Jukebox 7” box set released in 1989 by Blast First, Thrill Jockey will release a limited edition, heavy weight vinyl 7” box of our own: Thrill Jockey bands covering their favorite Thrill Jockey songs. The collection is planned as a set of 10 singles. The bands were allowed to cover any song by any Thrill Jockey band, and here’s some of what they chose. Tortoise chose to cover “Falls Lake” by Nobukazu Takemura, a Japanese musician whose ground breaking albums are delicate combinations of live instrumentation (largely played by Takemura himself), analog synths and computer manipulated or simulated voice recordings (on one record he used a computer program designed for those who are speech impaired). Arbouretum recorded “Bus Stop,” a dark beauty by Thalia Zedek, a Boston musician also known for her work in the bands Come and UZI. Thalia will be recording her second Thrill Jockey record this fall for release in early 2008, and also makes a contribution to the box set. Special guest on Arbouretum’s recording is Victoria from Beach House, with whom Arbouretum are touring Europe this fall. The Sea and Cake recorded “Spider’s House” by Califone from their most recent album, Roots and Crowns. The vocal styles of The Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop bring an entirely new feeling to the song. Califone and The Sea and Cake are touring this fall and will both be performing at Thrill Jockey’s Anniversary shows in London and Chicago. Pit er Pat selected a gem by The Lonesome Organist, “Flew Out my Window,” from his album “Cavalcade,” re-interpreting it with a killer calypso feel. Pit er Pat’s Butchy Fuego recently performed as drummer number 7 in Boredoms’ 77 Boadrum performance in New York. Pit er Pat are touring in North America this fall with The Fiery Furnaces. Directions in Music covered “Toy Boat” by Jeff Parker, reminding us very much of the first Tortoise singles when Bundy Brown was in the band. Also, Pullman covered “3 am” by the Chicago Underground Quartet. David Byrne covered “Ex Guru” by The Fiery Furnaces. Archer Prewitt covered “Mrs. Turner” by The National Trust. Bobby Conn, Califone and Thalia Zedek covered Freakwater songs - “Washed in the Blood,” “Jewel” and “ Flat Hand,” respectively. Freakwater covered “Passengers” by The Zincs. The Zincs covered “Blue Marble Girl” by Giant Sand. Howe Gelb covered “Boxers” by John Parish. John Parish covered “Vampiring Again” by Califone. Sue Garner & Rick Brown covered “ UMO” by OOIOO. Adult. covered “Underwater Wave Game” by Pit er Pat. Angela Desveaux covered “Two Moons” by Arbouretum. Eleventh Dream Day covered “I Like the Name Alice” by Sue Garner. Mouse On Mars covered "Middlenight" by The Sea and Cake. We hope you all enjoy this box set as much as we do and that it inspires you to chase down and listen to the originals - they are killer too! 	Wahnsinn! Endlich am Start! Mit wunderschönem Beigleitheft! Die Songs auf diese Schallplatte sind ein umwerfendes Beispiel für das, was ein Punk-Papst einmal als „fetzige schwäbische Moralschocker“ feierte und ein Pop-Papst als „neo-pietistische Protestlieder“ verhöhnte. Wer hat nun Recht? Eins jedenfalls ist klar: Die gut zwei Dutzend Leute, die an „Schallbladd“ beteiligt waren, wissen, was geht und was nicht. Griffig und spekulativ zugleich präsentieren sie uns einen bisher kaum bekannten Diskurs, der über Generationen hinweg gehegt und gepflegt wurde. Ob als krasser Schwank, ulkige Spuk- und Spaßgeschichte, erschütterndes Märchen oder befreiender Popsong – schwäbische Popkultur hat es immer schon verstanden, virtuos zwischen den Polen ‚gemütlich‘ und ‚ungemütlich‘ zu changieren. So auch hier! Fast 30 Jahre nach der semi-legendären Postpunk-Kompilation „Schwabesäkel International“ (1983) dokumentiert „Schallbladd“ heute den Status Quo. Und was für geniale Schnapsideen wahr geworden sind! Jeder Tic ein Treffer! Man sieht Masken wandern und hört fremde Zungen singen. Entsprechend dem Motto ‚Lokal lieben, global klingen‘ liefert „Schallbladd“ den Beweis, dass Folklore keine Falle sein muss. Wenn es mal hakt, helfen spektakuläre Sparwitze weiter. Das alles ist vor allem musikalisch eine Wonne. Twee Pop, Neue Musik, Yachtrock, Bossa Nova, Disco, Avantjazz oder Psychobeat – alles ist im Überfluss vorhanden. Der Imperativ ist ganz schlicht: „Embrace!“, „Enjoy!“, „Nastracka Now!“ Das geht jetzt durchaus auch an die Adresse der Hineingeschmeckten und anderer Novizen. „Schallbladd“ sollte für lange Zeit unser aller schönstes Plaisir sein. Referenzen aus kongolesischer Soukous-Musik treffen auf krachende Riffs, die auch den Strokes gut zu Gesicht stehen würden. Manchmal erinnern sie aber auch die Talking Heads während ihrer kosmopolitischen Phase. Dabei entwickeln sie einen ganz eigenen Sound, der einem insbesondere live den Boden unter den Füssen wegzieht und dabei ebenso multikulti wie indie ist. Die Musiker um den Sänger Ezra Koenig trafen sich an der Columbia Universität und stellten fest, dass sie alle eine ungeteilte Liebe für Paul Simons „Graceland“ Album hegten und zudem spanische Popmusik auf keinem ihrer Mixtapes fehlen durfte. Schon nach den ersten Auftritten wurde die Band zu den neuen Lieblingen in der großen weiten Welt des Internets. 	TIP Kessel Buntes: historische Aufnahmen aus den Hayes-Archiven. Zwei Jahre verbrachten die Macher des englischen Labels Honest Jon’s in den legendären EMI-Archiven in Hayes, Middlesex, um sich dort mehr als 150.000 Schellackplatten aus aller Welt anzuhören. Nach Compilations mit westafrikanischer und irakischer Musik der 20er-Jahre erscheint mit "Sprigs Of Time" ein Kessel Buntes mit Aufnahmen aus aller Welt. Die dreißig Lieder aus den Jahren 1903 bis 1957 stammen aus England (Joseph Taylors titelgebendes "Sprig O’ Thyme") bis Japan (das wunderschöne "Seigaiha" von der Imperial Palace Band). Orgelklänge aus Georgien laufen neben Rumbarhythmen aus Beirut und tamilischen Versuchen, das motorisierte Transportwesen zu vertonen. Dazu ertönen Vierzigerjahre-Fado und Lieder bengalischer Bettler. Es finden sich auch bekannte Namen: Neben Joseph Taylor ist die unvergleichliche Fairuz zu hören und sogar Ruben Gonzales, der anonym die "Rumba Negra" singt. Selbstverständlich wurden die Aufnahmen, wie die anderer Hayes-Archiv-Veröffentlichungen, liebevoll in den Abbey-Road-Studios restauriert und erscheinen mit vielen zeitgenössischen Fotos.

	green wax Taken directly from the back of the album cover: "The Most Influential Debut Album" Available for the first time, in it's original form What you are holding in your hand is what the first Velvet Underground album would have sounded like had it not been rejected by the powers that be. Andy Warhol's objective was to capitalise on the buzz surrounding the bands debut gigs under the guide of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable shows. A Music - art - freak out - happening. Andy, wanting to keep the band's abrasive sound and seedy subject matter , arranged for a session at a run down New York studio called Scepter Studio's , under the watchful eye of a Mr. Norman Dolph. Payment for the four day recording session in April 1966 was one of Andy's paintings. Which in time would prove very financially rewarding for Mr. Dolph. The recording cut onto acetate were listened to by Columbia Records and rejected. As was all the great era defining music, check out The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for similar tales of woe. The group would later that year be dispatched to Los Angeles to re-record the bulk of these tunes, 'Heroin', 'Venus in Furs', and 'I'm Waiting for the Man' with another producer Tom Wilson at a studio called TTG. The other tunes would be remixed and a recording of 'Sunday Morning' cut in New York would be added alongside 'There She Goes Again'. The Track Listing changed around to give a more user friendly feel to the album. Here we present the original album taken from the acetate version with it's original running order. ‘European Son’ opens the album, which is a completely different take than the released version. It has a bluesier structure that builds more gracefully and is several minutes longer. “Black Angel’s Death Song’ is a different mix to the finished tune. ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ again is a different mix to the released version. ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ has a radically different sound that has less echo on Nico’s vocals and the backing vocals are lower in the mix. ‘Heroin’ is a completely different version. The guitar line is different, vocal inflections are different and contain some different lyrics. The drumming is more primitive and runs parallel with a tambourine. ‘Femme Fatale’ is also a radically different mix. The percussion is more prominent and the background vocals used in a peppier way. ‘Venus In Furs’ is a completely different version. The vocal accents are different. Instrumentation more based around John Cale’s violin than the guitar, as in the released version. ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’ is a completely different version. The guitar line is completely different and some of the lyrics also. No drums, just tambourine and a bluesy guitar solo. ‘Run Run Run’ is a different mix to the released version. What also changes the feel of the Album is the running order. This original version starting with 'European Son' and with the absence of the lighter cut 'Sunday Morning' that opened the released version, gives the album darker feel. Which one is better? that is up to you to decide. But now for the first time since 1966 you can hear the dreamscape that the band and Mr. Andy Warhol had in store for us. So sit back, peel slowly and listen to this lost masterpiece in all it's unripened? glory........

Natürlich bleibt ihr Mix aus pianogetriebenem emotionalem Indierock eher Musik für regnerische und dunkle Tage, aber die neuen Songs kommen um einiges flotter und eingängiger rüber. Steht der Band ausgezeichnet. Die Vergleiche mit den immer genannten Black Heart Procession oder The Dirty Three sollten sich somit endgültig erledigt haben.
