	Endlich der Nachfolger der Schweden, die vor zwei Jahren bereits mit der ,Gothenburg Rifle Association'' einen kleinen Hit gelandet haben. Ruhiger ist ,Human Universals'' geworden, reifer könnte man es auch bezeichnen. Nachdem ,Gothenburg Rifle Association'' fertig gestellt war und zahlreiche Shows gespielt wurden, entstand ein Gefühl der Melancholie. Diese wurde Grundlage für die neuen Songs. Das Ergebnis ist ein Album, das seine Intensität aus der Spannung zwischen Aggression und Hingabe zieht. Der Produzent Hans Olsson war eine sehr bewusste Wahl, denn seine Erfahrung vom Arbeiten mit Bands wie SILVERBULLIT und UNIVERSALPOPLAB konnten dem Ganzen den richtigen Schliff geben. Das Resultat: Gitarren schieben, Synthesizer und schwere Vocals beherrschen das Soundscape, in dem der Bass und die Drums mehr Raum als vorher einnehmen. So bewegt man sich zwischen JAM, OASIS und TALK TALK. Zwischen jangly Sixties-Pop, Ausflügen in den Folk und Gitarren Exzessen in bester JAM Manier, findet sich immer mal wieder auch ein Plätzchen für die unbestrittenen Punk-Rock Wurzeln der Band.

	The Carnation is a rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden and their song'' I don't want to lose you'' is one of the best powerpop songs in this time. Together the well dressed gentlemen of this quintet are doing their best to create a unique and personal mix of pop melodies, punk attitude and a trashy, new wave-sound. This EP consists of material from a while back but is still valid. It is so by showing beyond any doubt that The Carnation are blessed with the ability to write honest and oh-so-catchy tunes. This spring the band is putting a single out and the autumn will see the release of The Carnation's first full length-album, which will hit stores all over the world in September. 	Wer hier ''typischen'' Dirtnap Sound a la Briefs oder Spits erwartet, liegt mit dem Debüt der Charming Snakes garantiert falsch. Stattdessen konzentriert sich die Band aus Seattle auf eine Mischung aus kantigem Post Punk mit leichten Noise Versatzstücken und treibendem Wave Punk, wobei die Betonung dabei eindeutig auf letzterem liegt. Mich erinnert's an Bands wie The Fall, Selby Tigers, vielleicht ein bischen an Sonic Youth und die Thermals oder sogar was das markante Bassspiel angeht auch an Bloc Party... Dabei werden die Charming Snakes allerdings garantiert nie zu Presselieblingen, denn dafür ist die Gesamtatmosphäre auf ''Ammunition'' zu bedrohlich und unterschwellig agressiv - bestes Beispiel dafür ist das knapp 8-minütige ''Epic jams'', bei dem sich in bester NY No Wave Tradition ein blökendes Saxophon einschleicht oder das direkt anschlie?ende ''Love life'', ein straighter, heftiger Garage Punker. Zwar keine alltägliche Dirtnap Kost, aber den hohen Label-Qualitätsstandard hält die Platte allemal.

	Das Cover mit den wirren Zeichnungen deutet etwas süßlichere Musik an, FEELING OF LOVE ist aber eine One-Man-Band aus Frankreich, die eher den musikalischen Extremsport bevorzugt. Auf dem vorliegenden Splitrelease wird er diesmal meistens von einem Drummer unterstützt, so dass man jetzt zu zweit den Club und die Trommelfelle zerlegen kann. So treffen sich dann eine heulende Slidegitarre, Keyboardkrach und rumpelige Beats zum Drogen-Bluespunk, und ich muss grinsen bei dem Gedanken, was gerade wohl die Nachbarn denken. Manchmal kann man sogar drauf tanzen. Die Italiener von den MOVIE STAR JUNKIES scheinen zumindest live einen ähnlichen Durchdrehfaktor wie die früheren BLACK LIPS zu bevorzugen, die vier Songs der 10'' sind aber nicht ganz so kaputt wie die der Kollegen, kommen eher stoischer, psychotischer und teilweise mit einem fiependen Saxophon. An einigen Stellen fast wie die SCIENTISTS unproduziert, an anderer dann mehr als klassische Bluespunker. Aufgenommen hat übrigens eine Hälfte der MOJOMATICS, der bei einem Song auch seine Harp beigepackt hat.

	WHY CRO(W)S? Chris Wollard(Hot Water Music) and Bill Clower(radon),living together at the time, wanted to start a band. After an unsuccessful attempt to turn Rumbleseat into a rock-n-roll band, they formed The SHERYL CRO(W)MAGS in early 2000. Along the way they started a label, released 1 single and toured with Unitas up the East coast. Now with their debut full-length, and a slight name-change, they are ready to blow your heads off. Adding in the greatness of Kaleb Stewart(As Friends Rust) and James Ross(also of Radon) was a wise move to round out this ''buddy band'' quartet. That aside, it's impossible to ignore the presence of Chris Wollard of Hot Water Music. Bringing his trademark whisky, brutally heartfelt voice and the lyrical style so cherished by Hot Water's fans, Durty Bunny is strikingly similar to older Hot Water Music material, a sound greatly missed by some of their fans. But it isn't a Hot Water Music CD. Cro(w)s have their own sound, which is especially present on `There's Nothing Wrong,' and `#1 Hit.' Fans of the earlier, rawer sound of HWM will definitely appreciate this dark and powerful band. LP have 1unreleased bonussong.
